I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 58

Antonia seemed at a loss for a comeback. I could see her gritting her teeth. I took a slow sip of water, a faint smile on my lips. Since my rebirth, I hadn't let her walk all over me. Now that I had a job and financial independence, I didn't have to worry about her and her mother causing trouble or pressuring my father to control me.

Antonia took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She ran a delicate, manicured hand through her dark brown hair and glanced at Jacob. "Who is this? I've never seen him before."

I shot her a sideways glance. "A friend."

Jacob, ever polite, nodded. "Hello, I'm Jacob. I'm Ms. Jones's colleague."

"Colleague?" Antonia looked Jacob up and down, then leaned closer to me. "You're a married woman. Even if Steven can't stand you, you can't be using his money to keep a pretty boy on the side. And if you're going to lie, at least get your stories straight. He says he's your colleague, but you don't even have a job. How can you have a colleague?"

Before I could respond, Jacob shot to his feet, so flustered that he banged his knee on the table, wincing in pain. "No, no, you've misunderstood! I have a girlfriend. Ms. Jones and I are just colleagues. It's not what you think."

Antonia sneered at him. "You leeching pretty boy, I'm talking to Zephyra. When did I give you permission to speak?"

I started playing with my own phone, my voice light and dismissive. "Whether or not my morals are corrupt, my husband hasn't said a word. Why are you so concerned? You should worry about yourself. You're so full of vanity, hypocrisy, and schemes. Even if I close my eyes, I can hear the clacking of your abacus, you little thief."

"Thief?" Now Antonia was truly furious, her eyes wide with rage. "What did I steal? I'm telling you, this whole thing is on video. If you don't explain yourself, I'm sending this to Steven and your father! When they find out you're cheating, we'll see if they don't beat you to death!"
