Jacob looked stunned, clearly not expecting me to come to his defense.
Antonia’s face flushed with fury. “Are you threatening me?!”
A slow, chilling smile spread across my face. “Don’t ask such obvious questions. It only makes you look stupider. Since you can’t choose, I’ll choose for you. Option one it is.”
As my thumb hovered over the ‘send’ button, Antonia lunged, grabbing my hand. “Wait! Don’t send it! I’ll apologize, okay? I’ll apologize!”
I shook her off and crossed my arms. “Well? Get on with it.”
Humiliation was etched on every line of her face as she mumbled, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said those things about you.”
“What was that? I didn’t hear anything,” I said, theatrically cleaning out an ear before looking at Jacob. “Did you hear her?”
He caught on immediately. “Not a thing.”
Antonia’s eyes were red-rimmed as she raised her voice. “I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have said those things! I was wrong!”
I sighed. “All I’m hearing are crickets. Doesn’t sound very sincere to me. Maybe I should just…”
Before I could finish, Antonia broke. A raw, desperate shout ripped from her throat, silencing the entire restaurant. “Zephyra, I’m sorry! Jacob, I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have lied, I shouldn’t have slandered you, and I definitely shouldn’t have been such a snob and looked down on Jacob for not having money! I was wrong! I was completely and utterly wrong! Please, forgive me!”
She was practically screaming, her voice overpowering the restaurant’s ambient chatter and drawing every eye in the room. Her face was crimson, her eyes bloodshot, and her hands were trembling with rage. Finally, I was satisfied.
“He’s got some name recognition, I guess,” I said dismissively, typing a message to Myron. “But we’re getting a divorce, and talking about him is a drag. Let’s skip it.”
Jacob’s jaw dropped again. He was so transparent that I could practically read the thought on his face: A woman this young is already married and getting divorced?
I sighed, but offered no explanation. He’d find out soon enough that my soon-to-be ex-husband was the same jerk who stole his girlfriend. I could fight other battles, but I was tired of fighting Steven. I’d spent years in my past life proving to myself that I could never win against him. In that, I couldn’t help Jacob. He was on his own.
Just then, Myron sauntered over, a devil-may-care grin on his face. “I just saw you verbally slap that woman into next week. Wow. The whole restaurant heard her apology.”
I grunted in acknowledgment. Myron’s grin widened. “The timid little mouse learned how to roar. You’re a thousand times more captivating now than you used to be. If Steven saw you just now… tsk, he’d never let you go.”
