I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 68

Horace had his own life, his own love interest. Why was he always sticking his neck out for me? How was he ever going to win over the person he actually loved if he kept getting tangled up in my messes?

I didn’t know what to say. Steven’s face was a thundercloud, his eyes blazing with a barely suppressed rage. "You will never have that chance."

He snatched the other half of the pendant set from Horace. Forcing down his fury, he turned to Julian, his voice remarkably steady despite a slight rasp. "Uncle Julian, I have something to take care of. I'll be back."

With that, he seized my wrist and dragged me out of the room without another word. His grip was like iron; I was practically hauled out behind him.

I didn't dare look back at Uncle Julian and Horace, but I could imagine their expressions weren't pleasant. I had been in the right, but after this disastrous misunderstanding, I knew Steven would have a whole new arsenal of accusations to throw at me.

He pulled me past the nurses' station. One of the young nurses who had been looking after Uncle Julian saw me and gave me a friendly nod. Then her eyes landed on Steven, and she lit up. "Ms. Jones, who is this? Is that your brother?" she asked, her voice full of admiration. "You're so lucky! Not only is your husband handsome, but your brother is too!"

I felt Steven's grip tighten, the pressure so intense I had to bite back a cry of pain.

"Even the nurses get it wrong," Steven bit out, his voice laced with ice. "You're really something, Zephyra."

Sensing the shift in atmosphere, the nurse quickly fell silent. I gritted my teeth against the shooting pain in my wrist. "Steven, can you loosen your grip? You're hurting me."

"Hurting you?" he sneered, his lips a thin, unforgiving line. "Good. I hope it hurts like hell."

He dragged me all the way to the stairwell. The heavy metal door slammed shut behind us with a deafening clang, plunging us into a silence so profound I could hear my own breathing. It felt like we were the only two people in the world.
