"Your uncle has a medical emergency, and I know nothing about it. But Horace is there. He's taking care of him, he's paying his bills. What are you trying to do, Zephyra? Provoke me?"
I couldn’t quite follow his logic. Was he angry because Horace was doing the things a husband should be doing, or was he just mad that I hadn't given him a chance to play the hero, bruising his ego in the process?
"Steven, who has time to provoke you? Stop making things up. You know our situation perfectly well. We're getting a divorce. It would be strange for me to ask you for help!"
A chilling smile touched his lips. "So you turned to Horace instead? Zephyra, is he the real reason you suddenly want a divorce?"
His accusation was so absurd I had to laugh. "I want a divorce because I don't love you anymore!" I shot back. "You can't give me what I want. This has nothing to do with Horace, so leave him out of it. Honestly, the way you're interrogating me, you sound like a jealous husband. Don't tell me you've had a change of heart in this lifetime and started to fall for me?"
Of course, I was just saying it to provoke him. The idea of Steven loving me was laughable. I was convinced the world could end, and he still wouldn't give me a second glance.
An unreadable emotion flickered across his cold, handsome face, but his voice was as biting as ever. "Don't flatter yourself. The Lancaster family is one of the most respected names in the country. If you disgrace me with an affair, you and your lover will pay dearly."
He narrowed his eyes, taking a menacing step toward me. "But it seems you're intent on cuckolding me. In what world does that Horace—in looks, in status—even begin to compare to me? Just because I won't touch you, you have to go screwing around? Is that it, Zephyra? Are you that desperate?"
The color drained from my face. I stared at him, stunned. Maybe it was because he’d insulted me so many times, but a raw fury unlike anything I'd felt before surged through me. My hand flew up, cracking against his cheek with a sharp slap.
The sound echoed in the silent stairwell.
