I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 72

"Pfft!" I sprayed a mouthful of water across the bedside table. I coughed violently, tears streaming from my eyes. "Uncle Julian! What are you talking about?"

Horace and Steven, both in love with me? That was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard.

But Uncle Julian was on a roll, a speculative glint in his eye. "Horace stayed here day and night to take the burden off you. He spent his own money, he gave his time… He did everything a husband should do. If that's not love, what is?"

I immediately shot back, "He loves me, yes, but not like that! The day you got sick, Rachel took time off work to come to the hospital with me. She bought me food, lent me money when I was short, and texts me every day to ask how you're doing. Does that mean Rachel is in love with me too?"

A small smile played on Uncle Julian's lips, but his expression clearly said, You don't understand. "Zephyra, the way they look at you is different."

I sighed and shook my head. "I think you're overthinking things, Uncle Julian. You can say this to me, but please don't say it in front of Horace. He told me himself that he's in love with someone else. He's just waiting for her, even though he knows it might be hopeless."

Uncle Julian was unconvinced. After analyzing Horace, he moved on to Steven. "Steven is harder to read. He's calm, composed, doesn't show his emotions. But still… I think he loves you."

I was speechless. I couldn't blame Uncle Julian for thinking that about Steven, though. From the moment Steven met him, he'd been on his best behavior, acting in a way I'd never seen before—not even with his own mother.

But I had to set the record straight. "Uncle Julian, Steven is in love with someone else. He's deeply, madly in love with her, and that person is not me."

Julian gave me a knowing look. "Three hundred thousand. He gave it just like that. A man spending money on a woman is the best proof that he cares."
