I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 74

"Okay, I understand. Thank you," I said, then hung up without another word.

I leaned back against the hard bench, the number echoing in my head: one million.

If Myron came through, I would have a hospital, but I would still need the money. I ran through my options. First, I could earn it myself, but at my current salary, that would take at least a year, probably longer. That was too slow.

Second, I could divorce Steven and get the remaining seven hundred thousand of the settlement he'd promised. That was the fastest way to get a large sum of money and my most promising option, but after his recent tantrum, getting him to cooperate would be a challenge.

Third, I could go home and reclaim my rightful place at my father's company. Martin's business had only reached its current success because of the support Steven had provided after our marriage. In a way, at least half of that company was mine. But my father was even more difficult to deal with than Steven. It would be a long, drawn-out battle. If I succeeded, though, I would have far more than a million. I'd have tens of millions, maybe even hundreds. I'd be set for life.

After careful consideration, I decided to pursue all three paths at once. Whichever one paid off first would save Uncle Julian. But my primary focus had to be divorcing Steven. It was the quickest route.

He'd made it clear yesterday he wasn't going to make it easy, so I decided to give him a night to cool off before I brought it up again.

I went back to the room. Uncle Julian was still asleep. Horace was back with a bag of fresh fruit and was sitting quietly, looking at his phone. I called his name, and he looked up with a smile. He was so refined, the gold-rimmed glasses only adding to his scholarly air. "Where did you go?" he whispered.

I didn't want to burden him with this, so I just mumbled an excuse. He didn't press, his eyes dipping back down to his phone, his expression unreadable.

The next day, I slept in late. I couldn't fall asleep last night, and this morning I couldn't wake up. By the time I finally dragged myself out of bed, Horace had already gone out to get lunch.
