"Zephyra, you've really hit rock bottom, haven't you? Reduced to working as a caregiver," he sneered. "And you still have the nerve to divorce my brother? My mother was right. You're just making your own bed."
"Get out of my way," I snapped, my patience wearing thin. "I don't have time for this."
My dismissive attitude only seemed to fuel his anger. "You used to be so obedient, Zephyra. You'd kiss up to me, and I'd at least treat you like a human being. Who gave you the courage to act so high and mighty now? My mother said you're not even fit to shine my shoes. You're nothing but a servant in our family!"
He raised his voice, drawing the attention of people passing in the hallway. A small crowd began to gather.
"Now you're trying to act tough with me? Without my brother, you're nothing. A broke, country bumpkin! If I were you, I'd be on my knees, begging my brother for forgiveness. Maybe then your life wouldn't be so pathetic!"
I wasn't angry. In fact, I found it almost funny. In my past life, I knew he was a spoiled brat who saw me as nothing more than a servant, no matter how hard I tried. Because I loved Steven, I tolerated his insults. But this time around, even Steven had to get out of my way when he annoyed me. Thomas didn't stand a chance.
I smiled calmly. "How I live my life has nothing to do with you, does it? Instead of wasting your breath on me, you should probably go check on your little girlfriend. The one you just took to get an abortion. It would be a shame if something happened and it reflected poorly on the Lancaster family name."
