I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 77

I turned to see Uncle Julian sitting up in bed. Dressed in his hospital gown, his face covered in stubble, he looked anything but weak. His eyes were fixed on Thomas, radiating an intimidating aura that was both powerful and terrifying. I had never seen him look so fierce. He was usually so quiet and withdrawn.

Thomas was visibly startled, a flicker of fear in his eyes. He shot me a shocked look, then his face contorted with rage. "Zephyra, so you're not a caregiver after all! You're really something, sleeping with an old geezer like that! No wonder people call you a slut!"

"My brother is still alive, and you're already cheating on him with this old man? Do you have any respect for the Lancaster family? I'm going to tell my mother everything. You just wait!"

He pointed a finger at me, then spun around and hurried away.

My expression hardened. That little brat's mouth was filthy. If he hadn't run off so quickly, I would have slapped him twice.

I turned back to Uncle Julian, who was red in the face with anger. I quickly tried to soothe him. "Uncle Julian, he's just a spoiled child. It's not worth getting angry over. If you make yourself sick, I'll be heartbroken. Please, calm down."

"That uncultured little whelp!" he seethed. "Who is he? Does everyone in your husband's family treat you like this?"

I forced a smile. "Not really. It's all talk. Their words can't hurt me. Please don't be angry." I poured him a glass of water, but he just stared at me, his face grim.

"He didn't defend you? He just let them bully you? Is that why you want a divorce?"

Yesterday he had seemed so fond of Steven, but now he was distant. It was almost comical. I gave him a simplified version of the truth—family disagreements, issues with my mother-in-law. Uncle Julian listened with a tight expression, then said no more.

I crossed my arms and gave him a sidelong glance. "Gordon, you can go back to your work. I'll just look around."

"Of course, Mrs. Lancaster. As you wish."

After he left, I wandered through the office. It was lunchtime, so most employees were out, and the ones working overtime were all in the conference room. I drifted over and peered through the glass door.

Steven sat at the head of the table, his handsome face a cold, emotionless mask, looking as if someone owed him a fortune. I had to admit, even though he was a jerk, he was breathtakingly handsome. With his flawless features, brilliant mind, and the powerful charisma of a mature man, it was no wonder I had fallen for him so hard in my past life. Who wouldn't fall for someone with looks, money, status, and intelligence?
