I was speechless. That son of a bitch.
I straightened up, my voice ringing with indignation. "I don't have any money. If you want it back so badly, divorce me and deduct it from the settlement."
Steven let out a derisive laugh. "You're a better negotiator than I thought. Using my money to pay your debt to me, and I still end up having to pay you. Here's a better idea: why don't I just give you the Lancaster Group? Let's see you run it. Maybe in a month, the world will have two Lancaster Groups."
I could feel him mocking me. "I may not have a business degree, but don't try to fool me," I gritted out. "You paid the three hundred thousand. I appreciate that. So, if we divorce, you only have to give me seven hundred thousand. But if we *don't* divorce, then it's just marital assets. There's no debt, and there's certainly no interest!"
His dark eyes bore into me. "So, you're not as stupid as you look. Does this mean you've decided against the divorce?"
My face flushed with anger. "Of course I want a divorce!"
His expression instantly darkened. He shot up from his chair, his tall frame looming over me. I flinched and stumbled backward, my feet tangling. I would have fallen if not for his desk behind me. He lunged forward, his hand wrapping around my waist to steady me as I landed on the hard surface. He leaned over me, his hands planted on the desk on either side of my body, trapping me.
Our faces were inches apart, our breath mingling in the tense space between us. I was stunned. If he leaned down just a little, he could kiss me. My hands flew up to his chest, a desperate barrier.
His handsome features were cold and hard, his eyes filled with a simmering frustration. "You want a divorce? Fine. You can have one after you pay me back my three hundred thousand."
