But with Steven, I hit a wall every single time. Was he my kryptonite?
A sharp *ding* from my phone pulled me from my thoughts. It was a message from Jacob.
"Zephyra, Verna just texted me. She's at the airport."
Reading his words, the knot of anger in my chest began to loosen. Verna was leaving today. In a few days, Steven would realize how much he missed her, how much he loved her. The thought of him coming to me, begging for a divorce, brought a smug smile to my face.
My huge settlement was almost within my grasp.
Another message from Jacob appeared. "Zephyra, thank you so much for arranging a ride for Verna today. I had a last-minute meeting and couldn't take her myself. I was so worried about her going alone. You're a lifesaver."
I quickly typed back, "It was nothing." I had only used Verna as a bargaining chip, a bluff that he had called without a second thought. But it didn't matter. No matter how much he resisted now, history was on my side. He would eventually realize Verna was his true love, and he would set me free. The day he let me go would be the day Jacob's suffering began. I didn't know which was worse: loving someone who didn't love you back, or having the person you love stolen from you. Either way, we were both pitiful figures in this drama.
I sighed, hopped off the desk, and slipped my shoe back on. As I walked toward the door, I paused. On a whim, I swept my arm across Steven's meticulously organized desk, sending papers and files scattering across the floor. He was a neat freak; everything had to be perfectly arranged. I smirked. Tomorrow morning, when he saw this mess, his entire day would be ruined.

The next morning, I arrived at Atelier V for my first official day. A grand arch made of colorful balloons stood at the entrance, a banner hanging from it.
"Welcome to our top designer, 'Kardia', on her first day at Atelier V!"
