Ira’s Pov
“The Angel Kings has ordered that prisoner Kester Roban be provided with food,” I say to the two guards sitting with cups of wine by the door to the basement.
Kester Roban is just a name that I heard servants talking about. Hopefully he is actually a prisoner in here as I assumed I heard them say.
“Why… would that… traitor be fed… good food?” one drunkenly stutters. He reaches out a hand and picks up one of the two pieces of fried beef from the plate I am holding.
I am glad they are too drunk to recognise me or stand from their chairs.
“I do not question the orders of the angel kings. If you open the door I will take the food to Sir Roban’s cell and wait for him to eat so I can back with this fine plate,” I reply.
“Finally a servant who understands her job,” the guard gladly smiles as he struggles to rise from his seat. He stumbles towards the door and falls right in front of it.
“Let me help,” I offer and take the keys from his hands with my free hand.
“Thank you dear. You… would make a… sweet wife,” he says while still on the floor.
I ignore his remarks and open the heavy door. I smile proudly after closing it. They will wait for me to return while thinking that I have to wait for the prisoner to eat. I will have left long before they realise that I have stayed too long.
I descend the staircase and walk down the space between the cells, looking for a secret doorway that may lead out of this palace. I slip the plate of food under the bars of a cell occupied by an aging woman. She could be a murderer and deserving of her punishment, but I cannot carry the food with me any longer.
She smiles gratefully as she literally crawls towards the food. I keep walking past the rest of the cells. I take a glance at Queen Andria’s cell as I pass and notice that she is falling asleep while still dangling from the rope by the neck. It’s a piteous sight. But she deserves every minute of the pain.
“I feel like I waited forever to see you again,” he says in a soothing tone. “Are you okay?”
I suddenly remember that I forgot to carry Linda’s herbs. But since I am out here now I can find some of my own. I am once again in the company of a true friend, someone who honestly cares. I thought he too had abandoned me, but it turned out he was just acting to avoid suspicion from the angel kings.
I am happy to be in his arms again, feeling safer and full of hope.
“I am a lot better now that I am out here,” I finally answer his question. “You said you have someone who knows where my father is?”
“Yes. But we must get out of here first,” he says while taking my hand.”
