Last night, Clive rushed over to Kristen’s apartment and found her collapsed in the bathroom.
Thankfully, it wasn’t anything serious—just too long in a hot bath, a little low blood sugar, and she’d stood up too fast, so she fainted. Clive picked her up and carried her straight to bed, gently rousing her until she finally came to. Tears streaked Kristen’s face as she tried to explain what happened. Some staff member had asked her for a message. She’d refused, so he backed off and just asked to borrow her phone for something quick, like a social media like. Kristen hadn’t thought much of it and agreed, never imagining he’d end up snooping through her photos.
“I told him, we’re not even married, Clive. You have to believe me. I’ll record a video right now and clear everything up!” she said in a rush, grabbing for her phone.
Clive caught her hand. Seeing her so upset, his voice softened. “It’s okay. I already asked Aiden to handle it. If you didn’t do anything wrong, just let it go.”
After making sure Kristen was really all right, Clive got ready to leave. Before he went, he told her that things with his grandmother were sorted out and that he’d make her the manager of R&D Team Two.
Kristen lit up and started excitedly telling him about a new project she wanted to start.
Clive stuck around for a bit, listening as she explained. The project sounded promising—definitely something worth looking into.
Halfway through, Kristen poured him a glass of juice, but as she handed it to him, it spilled all over his shirt.
“Oh no, I’m so sorry, Clive. Go take a shower—I’ll find you something clean to wear.”
Back when Clive was swamped at work, Timmy and Penny would sometimes stay the night at Kristen’s. Caroline often dropped by to pick them up, and would even use the shower sometimes, so there were always some of Clive’s clothes at Kristen’s place.
When Clive finished his shower and came out in fresh clothes, Kristen had already set out a late-night snack.
By then it was nearly two in the morning, so Clive decided to stay over. Of course, he crashed on the couch.
On the way to work the next day, Kristen mentioned needing a piece of lab equipment.
Clive was well aware of what Amelia was working on. Her project was critical—not just for landing the West Medicine deal, but also for his position at the company.
He’d double-checked with Kristen about which equipment she needed, and as he thought, Amelia wasn’t even using it.
It was such a small thing, and Amelia still wouldn’t budge. When did she get so petty?
Then again, she’d already gone to his grandmother and pushed the board to fire Kristen. Making things hard for Kristen now was hardly a surprise.
On the other end of the call, Amelia grew colder as Clive’s voice dripped with sarcasm.
Kristen spoke up, “Salmeron, Amelia’s right here. Do you want to talk to her yourself?”
Clive paused, frowning. “She’s with you?”
“Amelia, I’ve got work to do. That’s the end of it. Don’t bring it up again.” His voice was low and final.
The call ended.
He hadn’t given her a chance to explain or say no.
The other employees who overheard the call exchanged awkward looks.
It was obvious now—Amelia might be Mrs. Salmeron in name, but she was barely more than Kristen’s shadow.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, glad they’d chosen the right side.
“Ms. Sadinton, you heard Salmeron—we need the equipment for R&D Team Two too! You can’t keep all the good stuff for yourself,” someone chimed in, eager to get on Kristen’s good side.
“Yeah, just because Ms. Watts is nice doesn’t mean you can walk all over her!”
“Ms. Sadinton, even if you’re Mrs. Salmeron, you still need to be fair. This is a company, not your personal playground!”
One by one, the crowd started piling on, not holding back anymore.
