Amelia walked toward them, her face calm and unreadable.
Just moments ago, the two women had been gossiping up a storm, voices bright and eager. Now, as Amelia came closer, both of them dropped their heads, not daring to look her in the eye. Their conversation hadn’t exactly been quiet, and with no one else around, Amelia had definitely heard it all.
“Mrs. Salmeron, I... I was just talking nonsense earlier,” one of them blurted, her face going pale as Amelia stopped beside her.
Titles mattered around here, and no matter how polite Amelia might seem, she was still Mrs. Salmeron on paper. If she wanted to make things difficult, a single word to Clive could have this junior staffer packing her desk by tomorrow.
The thought made her even more nervous.
“Try not to spread rumors at work. Words have a way of coming back to you,” Amelia said as she walked past, her tone cool and even.
The woman nodded frantically. “I understand, Mrs. Salmeron. It won’t happen again.”
The name made Amelia’s brow twitch ever so slightly.
“At work, just call me Ms. Sadinton,” she corrected, not stopping.
“Yes, Ms. Sadinton.”
When Amelia headed straight toward the executive offices without another word, the two women finally relaxed, letting out the breaths they’d been holding and hurrying away.
But Amelia didn’t go to Clive’s office. Instead, she made a detour to the break room, heading for the fridge where she’d left some desserts for Penny and Timmy.
Of all the gossip she’d overheard, only the bits about Penny and Timmy had really hurt.
As for Kristen and Clive...
Amelia’s eyes turned cold, a flicker of mocking in her gaze. She’d already seen through those two back when she was stuck in a hospital bed, unable to move or speak.
She opened the fridge and paused.
The desserts she’d brought were gone.
For a moment, she just stared at the empty shelf.
Even just seeing her profile, Amelia could feel the warmth in Kristen’s eyes—a look so soft and loving it made her stomach twist.
“Dad, Momma Kristen’s blushing!” Penny announced with a giggle, covering her mouth as if she’d just spilled a secret.
Kristen pretended to be exasperated, giving Penny a gentle tap on her bottom. Penny squealed and curled up in Kristen’s arms, laughing so hard she could barely catch her breath.
Just one door away, they looked like the perfect little family.
Amelia stood in the hallway, the office air humming around her, but she felt frozen.
So cold.
The chill started in her heart and spread through her veins, leaving her numb.
“Momma Kristen, the desserts you bring me are always better than the ones at home,” Penny said, snuggling closer.
That kind of closeness, that easy affection—since waking up, Amelia hadn’t felt anything like it.
