“Danny, I want to see Grandpa’s old lab.”
Danny didn’t hesitate. He led Amelia down the hall to the room where Tony used to work. As soon as they stepped in, Amelia stopped short, completely thrown by the sight.
The place was packed with cutting-edge equipment. On the blackboard, her grandpa’s notes were still there, chalk scribbles full of formulas and sketches, like he’d just stepped out for a break.
Amelia took her time reading through the notes. It was obvious Grandpa had been working on some kind of cell regeneration project. But now, all the research files were missing. She tried searching the computer, but the whole thing had been wiped.
Someone had gone to a lot of trouble to erase every trace. That alone was unsettling. Then a wild thought hit her—maybe Grandpa had been working with the government. Maybe that’s why he’d secluded himself here, keeping everything under wraps.
But if the government really was involved, the Sadinton family should’ve gotten their assets back ages ago. Why would Grandpa let Hank and Bianca walk all over them for so long?
None of it added up.
She glanced in on Grandpa once more. He’d already fallen asleep after taking his medicine, looking peaceful for the first time in days. Before the tears could come, Amelia quietly slipped out.
Danny and Patrick walked her to the door.
“Miss Amelia, you’re welcome here every Sunday,” Patrick reminded her, his voice gentle but firm. “Any other day, though, it’s off-limits. That’s what the employer told us. Someone once wandered in by accident—there was screaming, and we never saw them again.”
Amelia’s curiosity about this mysterious employer only deepened.
She glanced out at the grounds, her eyes landing on a house that looked exactly like the Sadinton family’s old home. Suddenly, another thought crossed her mind.
“Oh—Danny, have you been the one taking care of my mother’s grave these last few years?”
Danny looked genuinely startled. “No, I haven’t,” he admitted. “Back then, I broke my leg and moved back home with Patrick. We only came back to Alson Creek four years ago, and came straight here. Honestly, I still don’t even know where your mom is buried.”
So it wasn’t Danny.
Then who had been tending her mother’s grave all this time?
Could it be the mysterious employer?
“Miss Amelia!” Patrick suddenly called out as she was about to leave.
Amelia glared at Kristen’s back. For a split second, it was like seeing Bianca all over again. Hatred surged up inside her, hot and blinding.
How dare she.
How dare Kristen show her face at her mother’s grave.
“Daddy, is this Grandma?” Penny asked, staring at the woman’s photo on the headstone. She looked curious, but a little scared too. The longer she stared, the more she realized her mom and grandma looked a lot alike.
“Yeah,” Clive answered, barely glancing at the grave.
The truth was, he was only there because Kristen wanted to visit her grandmother’s grave. The headstone had only been moved to this cemetery this year, and it was huge, sitting in the best spot on the highest hill.
Walking through the rows, Clive suddenly remembered that Amelia’s mother, Norma, was buried here too. He wasn’t even sure why, but he decided to stop by.
By the time he married Amelia, Norma had already been gone for years. She never talked about her father, just said he was dead.
Clive had never felt anything for his long-gone mother-in-law. The only time he’d even been to her grave was when Amelia dragged him there after their wedding, insisting he pay his respects.
