Amelia gave Clive a look so cold it could freeze the air between them. She wondered how he could still be so clueless.
She’d already told him everything once, the last time she dragged him to her mother’s grave. She’d laid it all out—her whole messy family history. Her dad had been a broke college student, taken in by the Sadinton family, her mom’s side. He’d ended up marrying into the family, taking her mother’s last name. His own surname was Lin.
None of it ever seemed to matter to Clive. He’d never cared, so of course he didn’t remember.
“Amelia, it really is you!” Kristen cried, tears welling up instantly. Amelia almost had to hand it to her. Only Kristen could act surprised and delighted at someone’s grave.
“I was only guessing before, but I can’t believe I was right! Amelia, it’s been twenty years—are you really still holding a grudge against us?”
A grudge?
Amelia’s hands curled into fists, nails biting into her palms. She was trembling with anger at Kristen’s shameless act.
But before she could get a word out, Clive jumped in first, frowning. “Kristen, you mean your half-sister is Amelia?”
Kristen’s eyes filled with tears, brimming with guilt. “Yes. I was so little back then—I barely remember my sister’s name…”
She’d always suspected Amelia might know the truth, so Kristen had fed Clive a story ahead of time. A little bit true, a little bit made up. That was always more believable.
“Sis, I’m so sorry. Let me apologize to you and Mrs. Sadinton for my parents.” Kristen took a step closer, pretending she was about to kneel, but Clive quickly pulled her up.
“What are you doing? You were only five, the same age as Penny. What could you possibly understand?” Clive shot Amelia a look, his annoyance obvious. Looking from Kristen’s fragile, teary face to Amelia’s icy glare, any sympathy he might’ve had for Amelia was gone.
“I know you always thought Kristen’s mom killed yours, but your mom died of illness. Mrs. Wong and Hank grew up together. Your mom fell for Hank at first sight and made him marry into the Sadintons. That’s not easy for any man’s pride.”
Clive took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “Amelia, that’s enough. You can’t keep blaming Kristen just because she’s an easy target. She didn’t choose her family.”
Meanwhile, Kristen stood behind Clive, looking so smug it was hard to miss.
The Sadinton family was down to just Amelia now. Who would believe her?
In the end, history is written by the winners.
Amelia, let’s see how you plan to fight me now.
Patrick couldn’t take it anymore. He stormed forward and grabbed Clive by the collar. “What the hell are you talking about? Hank chased after Miss Sadinton for years!”
Clive was already annoyed by this random guy suddenly showing up next to Amelia. Now, being grabbed by the collar, he completely lost it and shoved Patrick away, his patience gone.
