“Thank you all so much for coming out today to celebrate my birthday,” Mr. Baker said, nodding warmly at his guests.
Felix gently wheeled him to the seat at the very head of the main table.
Felix settled into the chair on Mr. Baker’s right. The rest of the table was filled with Baker relatives, but today, one seat right next to Mr. Baker had been purposely left empty.
A lot of guests exchanged glances, their eyes quickly sliding over to Kristen.
After all, she was the only one Mr. Baker had called into his study for a private meeting before the banquet. The last person to get that kind of attention had been a secretary from the President’s office, sent to deliver a special birthday gift.
“Who is Kristen, anyway? Watts family? Never heard of them,” someone whispered.
“If Mr. Baker is rolling out the red carpet, the Watts must be a big deal. Didn’t you see Cameron Henson hovering around her all night? My guess is they’re some old-money family from out east, just keeping a low profile until now.”
“Looks like the big-name families in Alson Creek might be getting a new member soon.”
Amelia sipped her tea, calm as ever, even as the whispers floated all around her.
No wonder Kristen kept stringing Cameron along. With him hanging on her every word and the Henson family’s reputation, she was boosting her status by the minute.
At the head of the table, Mr. Baker wore a polite smile as he glanced around—until his gaze stopped, sharp and focused, on someone in the crowd. Suddenly, his excitement was obvious. He grabbed Felix’s arm.
Felix leaned in as Mr. Baker asked, his voice low and urgent, “That girl with the side-swept hair and blue dress—whose family is she from?”
Side-swept hair, blue dress... Felix only needed a second to spot Amelia.
He quickly filled Mr. Baker in. When he finished, Mr. Baker’s eyes brightened even more. “Her last name is Song?”
Felix nodded. “Yes.”
“She looks just like... it’s incredible,” Mr. Baker murmured, barely able to hide his excitement.
Felix stopped in front of her, looking genuinely puzzled. “Ms. Watts, are you going somewhere?”
His voice wasn’t loud, but in the suddenly silent banquet hall, with everyone watching and plenty of people recording on their phones, it might as well have been shouted.
Kristen’s smile froze. “Sorry, what did you say?” She acted like she hadn’t heard.
What was going on? Wasn’t Felix here to invite her up front?
Felix raised an eyebrow and spoke a little louder. “I said, Ms. Watts, if you’re not leaving, could you please step aside? You’re blocking my way.”
He didn’t even look at Kristen again. His eyes were already locked on Amelia, who was standing behind her.
Felix smiled and offered his hand. “Miss Song, my grandfather would like you to join us at the main table.”
Nathan, who had been watching the whole thing, grinned and called out, “Well, would you look at that, the invitation was for Amelia after all. Some people really jumped up for nothing. That’s awkward, huh?”
