Kristen had been anxious, half afraid something had gone wrong with her mother Bianca and that the Flying Phoenix they brought was a fake. But now she could finally breathe easy.
A cold smirk tugged at Kristen’s lips. All the humiliation she’d suffered just moments ago felt completely avenged.
Amelia, that woman, really was starved for attention. She was so desperate to steal the spotlight that she actually tried to fool Mr. Baker with a forgery.
Kristen glanced over at Clive. He was frowning, his eyes fixed on Amelia, looking genuinely worried. That only made Kristen more annoyed.
“Clive.” She grabbed his hand, her voice edged with irritation. “Are you actually worried about her?”
Clive met Kristen’s gaze, pulling his attention back from Amelia. He wasn’t worried exactly. More like puzzled.
The Amelia he knew would never be stupid enough to dig her own grave like this.
“Don’t overthink it. We’re divorced. Whatever she does has nothing to do with me anymore.” Clive’s voice was casual, as if none of this mattered.
If they hadn’t split up, today would have been a disaster for the Salmeron family. Amelia would have dragged all of them down with her.
Felix shot Amelia a heavy look before turning to Mr. Meshell. “Mr. Meshell, are you absolutely sure this bronze is a fake?”
“Of course.” Mr. Meshell sounded impatient. “I can spot a forgery in an instant. If I’m wrong today, I’ll retire on the spot and never appraise another piece again.”
He was betting his entire reputation on this. There was no way he’d be mistaken.
Felix drew in a slow breath, disappointment flickering across his face.
He’d finally felt a spark of interest in a woman, and this was how it ended.
“Ms. Sadinton, I think you’d better give us a very good explanation.” Before he’d even finished speaking, several armed security guards appeared behind him, stiff and serious. The tension in the room spiked.
