Why is he still lying?
But running a business meant you couldn’t just argue with customers, even if they were out of line. So she brought the conversation back to their order.
Clive handed the menu to Amelia. She picked a single meal set, handed the menu back, and settled in with her lemon water, eyes drifting to the window. Her expression was calm and distant, like Clive was just some stranger she barely knew.
Clive finished ordering quickly.
As soon as the owner stepped away, Clive looked across at Amelia. His lips pressed in a thin line, a flicker of real regret in his eyes.
“About what happened at the Baker family’s place today—I didn’t stand up for you. I had my reasons. Ever since you and Sammy made that side deal, my position at the company’s been… complicated. I just—”
He was still making excuses. Still trying to pin his weakness on her.
“You don’t need to explain,” Amelia cut him off, her voice cool and flat. “I don’t expect anything from you. Clive, if you’re going to be a coward, at least own it. I might actually respect you for that.”
Clive’s face tightened, a flush of embarrassment coloring his cheeks.
Amelia couldn’t be bothered to waste more words. She went straight to the point. “I’m getting custody of Timmy. As for Penny…”
Her heart clenched at the mention of her daughter.
She honestly didn’t know if Penny would want to stay with her.
If Kristen were just some ordinary stepmom who treated Penny as her own, maybe it wouldn’t hurt so much. But Kristen was Hank and Bianca’s daughter. If Penny insisted on choosing Kristen, then no matter how much it hurt, Amelia would have to let her go.
“I can give up custody of Timmy,” Clive said, “but I have one condition. Until he turns eighteen, he has to follow the education plan set by the Salmeron family. That means international school, all the way through to a top-three university. It’s the best future for him.”
“Timmy’s talented. I want him to have the chance to inherit Cloudcrest. He deserves that. Whether he wants it or not, we’ll let him decide when he’s grown up. He can live with you, but you can’t keep me from seeing him.”
He met Amelia’s eyes. “Timmy’s my son too. I don’t want to miss out on his childhood. You know how much it matters for a kid to have their dad around, right?”
Amelia didn’t answer.
Every word hit right where it hurt most. She knew better than anyone.
When Clive noticed a bit of the tension leave her face, he realized she’d agreed.
