Amelia said, “No need. Just be honest. If I ever need you, I’ll reach out.”
“Alright.” Susie hesitated, then asked, “Hey, about your Alzheimer’s research from college—is it true you finally made a breakthrough? There’s a ton of rumors floating around, and honestly, some of them sound pretty convincing.”
Amelia didn’t hide anything from Susie. “There’s still one really tough problem I haven’t solved yet. I’ll probably have to go beg my professor for help soon.”
Susie frowned, confused. “So, what about all those rumors? Aren’t you going to clear things up?”
“Not right now. If Kristen asks, just say you don’t really know what’s going on.”
Susie nodded, even though she didn’t fully get it.
“Oh, and tomorrow’s Mrs. Graham’s birthday. Professor Graham booked a restaurant for dinner. Come with us. I’ll text you the address.”
“Me? Are you sure that’s okay?” Amelia looked uncertain.
“Come on, it’s fine. Worst case, you’ll just get another lecture. Honestly, you could learn a thing or two from Kristen about not caring what people think. If you had even a tenth of her thick skin, you’d be set.” Susie grinned, then added, “If the professor asks who gave you the address, just say it was Greg. He gets blamed for everything anyway.”
Amelia couldn’t help laughing. “Alright, deal.”
After she finished talking with Susie, Amelia got up to stretch. She’d just filled a glass with water when her phone buzzed. Francisco’s name flashed on the screen.
She answered right away. “Francisco.”
“Ms. Sadinton, you’re honestly amazing. Someone asked me about your project, just like you said would happen. I dropped the info you wanted me to.”
“Thank you,” Amelia said, genuinely grateful.
“No problem.” Francisco glanced over at Mr. Packman’s office. A bunch of senior managers were lined up outside, looking like kids waiting outside the principal’s office.
The door opened and two managers shuffled out, looking completely defeated. Two more went in.
Francisco winced. He could practically feel the tension rolling out from that office.
He felt a little sorry for everyone stuck reporting today.
Honestly, ever since he got back from meeting Ms. Sadinton yesterday, Mr. Packman had been in a terrible mood.
Francisco couldn’t help but ask, “Ms. Sadinton, did you and Mr. Packman have a fight or something?”
“I don’t think so…”
