Amelia gave a wry smile and shrugged. "I don't even know if she'll agree to see me, let alone accept my gift. Every year, holidays and birthdays, I show up with something, but she always turns me away."
Belle squeezed her arm gently. "Come on, Amelia. She’s human, too. This time, I bet she’ll finally let you in."
"I hope so," Amelia said quietly. "Even if she refuses again, at least she’ll know I tried."
She took the gift box from the sales associate, nodded her thanks, and slipped her arm through Belle’s as they walked out together.
As soon as they left, Kristen and Lena emerged from around the corner.
Lena rolled her eyes hard, staring after Amelia. "Ugh, could she be any more persistent? She’s everywhere! Seriously, after what her mom did—cheating on Hank and disgracing the family—she still dares to play the victim in front of the Bakers? Please. Kristen, you’ve always been the real thing. Amelia will always just be pretending."
She linked arms with Kristen and grinned. "Honestly, I’m just waiting for your wedding with Salmeron! Actually, I should start calling you Mrs. Salmeron already."
The sound of “Mrs. Salmeron” made Kristen blush, though she tried to act modest. "We haven’t set a date yet. My parents are meeting Mr. Salmeron and his mom tomorrow night. We’ll see what happens."
"Oh, come on, it’s basically a done deal. Mrs. Salmeron," Lena teased, laying it on thick.
Kristen couldn’t help but smile. The two of them strolled into the shop Amelia had just left. While Lena browsed, Kristen leaned over to the sales associate. "Excuse me, I saw two women leave just now with a really pretty gift box. Which collection is that from?"
"Oh, the young lady said it was for an elder’s birthday," the associate replied. "We made sure to wrap it up nicely."
"An elder?" Kristen’s eyes narrowed.
What elder could Amelia possibly have left? Or did she find herself a new sugar daddy?
She pressed for more details. "Did she say who it was for?"
The associate could tell Kristen cared more about the customer than the pearls. "Sorry, ma’am, but we can’t share personal information about our clients."
Kristen pointed at the row of pearl necklaces in the case, each one worth a small fortune. "I’ll take all of these."
"All of them?" The associate’s eyes went wide with excitement.
