Shane gave another sympathetic glance at the old man sitting by the window, silent and lost in thought. He let out a heavy sigh, nodded to Amelia, and slipped out of the room.
Danny broke the silence. “Miss Amelia, is it true? Did you really come up with a cure for Mr. Sadinton?” His eyes were bright with hope.
Amelia forced a tired smile. She picked up a thin blanket, walked over to her grandfather, and draped it gently over his shoulders.
“It’s not that simple,” she said softly. “Even the first batch of test medicine needs at least three more months. I lied to Hank about having a cure.”
Patrick scratched his head, looking confused. “Miss, when did you figure out Christine was one of Hank’s people?”
“It was at Mr. Baker’s birthday dinner,” Amelia replied. “The night you got grabbed by Hank’s men.”
Patrick looked even more lost.
But Danny’s eyes widened in sudden realization. “So that’s why you sent me that message about your plans and told Patrick to wait for you at the corner. You wanted him to help prove your identity if anything happened!”
Amelia nodded. “Exactly. I sent that message right when Christine was doing Grandpa’s regular check-up. I knew you’d be there watching.”
“If Christine really was working for Hank, he’d know I’d found the nursing home. And with how paranoid Hank is, he’d definitely have Christine keep an even closer eye on us and report back to him.”
Danny nodded. “Makes sense. There was a little mess that day. Christine almost dropped Mr. Sadinton. I rushed to help and left my phone behind. Christine later brought it back to me herself.”
Patrick finally understood. No wonder Amelia had arranged for him to stay so hidden that day, away from the Baker family—and Hank’s people still managed to catch him.
Patrick clenched his fists, his jaw tight with anger. “Hank’s a real piece of work. He actually planted Christine with us for so long. Good thing that mysterious guy who helped us take care of Mr. Sadinton warned us—no one but us and the Sadinton family can know about the secret passage here.”
Amelia fell silent.
So Ryan had suspected Christine all along.
She felt a wave of relief. Even before she got involved, Ryan had made sure her grandfather was safe.
He knew everything about her—her sick husband, her son’s school and class. She was completely under his thumb. She’d never dare betray him.
Just as he was about to lose it, loud, urgent knocks echoed from the front door.
A servant went to answer it. A group of strangers stood on the doorstep.
“Who are you here to see?” the servant asked.
Hank heard the commotion and walked over, just in time to see the man in front flash a police badge.
Hank’s face went pale. A cold dread settled over him.
“Good afternoon. We’re the police. Here’s a warrant,” the officer said. “Hank Watts, you’re under suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. You’ll need to come with us for questioning.”
