If you let hatred cloud your eyes, it can twist everything out of shape.
Clive felt like he had two little voices fighting inside his head, pulling him in different directions until his whole head ached.
Caroline was still fuming.
“Clive, you cannot let Amelia trick you again! She acts all sweet and innocent when you’re around, but she’s vicious when she wants to be. Did you already forget how she bullied me? She almost ruined me!” Just thinking about it made Caroline’s face burn with humiliation. She wished she could tear Amelia apart right then.
Because of Amelia, she’d almost lost her reputation and been sent out of the country to avoid the scandal.
Sure, it had been wrong of them to set her up in the first place, but once Amelia figured out their plan, she could’ve just walked away. Instead, she turned it around and humiliated Caroline for everyone to see.
After all, Caroline had called her sister-in-law for years.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She gritted her teeth. “And that day, when she left the Salmeron family, she almost held my head underwater. Clive, Amelia’s clearly out for revenge. She’s got nobody now, and she can’t stand to see you and Kristen happy.”
Clive’s face was dark as he stared at the little pile of red and white powder on the table. He didn’t say a word.
He knew Amelia hated Kristen and wasn’t exactly fond of him either. That much was obvious.
But he also knew how much Amelia loved her kids.
No matter what, she would never hurt her own daughter just to get back at them.
Kristen watched Clive’s face closely. She reached out and gently tugged Caroline’s sleeve. “Let it go, Caroline. What’s done is done. No point bringing up the past. Your brother’s got enough on his plate right now.”
Just then, there was a knock at the door. The housekeeper called in, “Sir, Dr. Reed has finished examining Miss Penny.”
Adrian was waiting downstairs in the living room.
Clive went to check on Penny first.
She was in good spirits, munching on a cookie. She looked up with a sweet “Daddy,” and then turned to Caroline politely. “Hi, Aunt Caroline.”
