Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 509

The ripped sachet was tossed aside, its contents now spread out on the table in front of Kristen.

Clive didn’t bother beating around the bush. He wanted answers, and he wanted them now. “Kristen, why did you cut open the sachet I gave Penny?” he asked, his tone sharp.

Kristen looked honestly confused. She reached for the torn sachet, brushing her fingers over it before frowning. “Clive, this isn’t the one I gave Penny.”

Clive’s eyes narrowed, full of doubt. “What are you talking about? I took this straight from Penny’s backpack. How could it not be the same one?”

“It just isn’t,” Kristen said firmly. “It might look similar, but I embroidered Penny’s name on the one I made her. I wanted to make sure she wouldn’t lose it or mix it up with someone else’s.”

Clive clearly wasn’t convinced. His gaze was cold and searching, waiting for her to slip up.

Kristen looked away, her attention shifting to the pile of herbs and powders Clive had dumped on the desk. He’d emptied everything out.

“Penny’s been having trouble sleeping, so I filled her sachet with calming herbs and spices. I used a recipe from an old herbal book. I honestly have no idea what these chemical powders are,” Kristen said, biting her lip. She met Clive’s gaze, her voice steady but pleading. “Clive, I don’t know what you’ve heard, but I would never hurt Penny. Ever.”

Clive’s lips pressed into a tight line, but before he could say anything, Caroline burst into the room.

“Clive, are you seriously listening to Amelia’s rumors again?” Caroline shot him a look, clearly fed up. She’d come with Kristen, stopped by to check on Penny, and then hung back by the door, listening until she couldn’t stay quiet any longer.

Clive glared at her. “This isn’t your business, Caroline.”

She scoffed. “Of course it is. Kristen’s been taking care of Penny for five years—she loves her like her own daughter. There’s no way she’d ever hurt her.” Caroline shot a pointed look. “If anyone’s got an agenda, it’s Amelia. She’s only been back in Penny’s life a few months. Honestly, I doubt she cares about Penny half as much as Kristen does.”

“Caroline,” Kristen reached out and gently tugged her arm, her voice soft. “Come on, that’s not fair. Amelia is Penny’s mother. Of course she cares. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t have contacted Donna today to check on Penny.”
