“Good afternoon, Mrs. Sadinton.”
Jinx always liked Amelia. Honestly, she was a bit jealous that Penny got to have such a great mom.
Amelia smiled warmly. “Hello, Jinx. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
Then she turned to her daughter. “Penny—”
But Penny just buried her face in Clive’s chest. “Dad, I want to go home. Can we please leave now?”
Clive frowned, but this time he didn’t let Penny get away with it. After all, Amelia was still her mom.
“Penny, say goodbye to your mom. You can’t be rude.”
Penny turned just enough to glance at Amelia, then mumbled, “Goodbye.”
She immediately hid her face in Clive’s shoulder again, leaving Amelia staring at the back of her head.
Amelia’s eyes softened with hurt, but she still managed a smile. “Goodbye, Penny.”
Before she left, her eyes caught the sachet hanging from Penny’s backpack. Clive noticed too.
Amelia took Timmy’s hand and started walking towards the car, Jinx trailing behind.
Jinx finally spoke up, her voice small. “Mrs. Sadinton, could you take me home?”
Amelia looked surprised. “Jinx, where are your parents? Isn’t someone coming to pick you up? I really can’t take you without checking with your family first.”
Jinx clutched her backpack straps, eyes dropping to the ground.
Timmy piped up, “Mom, Jinx doesn’t have a mom.”
Amelia’s heart tightened a little as she looked down at the thin, quiet girl.
“All right. Come on, hop in. We’ll call your family from the car to let them know I’m bringing you home.”
“Okay. Thank you, Mrs. Sadinton.”
Jinx nodded, her voice soft but grateful.
She was a bit smaller than other kids her age, so Amelia picked her up and set her gently in the car.
Penny, still curled up against Clive, caught the scene out of the corner of her eye. She pouted and quickly looked away.
“Dad, can we go now?”
Clive waited until Amelia’s car pulled out of the lot before heading to his own car with Penny and driving home.
