Ryan’s dark eyes locked onto hers, and for the briefest moment, Amelia was sure—he was pleading with her. The look in his eyes was raw, almost desperate.
She stood there, frozen, completely thrown off balance.
“Ryan…”
His name caught in her dry throat, but she honestly had no idea what to say next.
Ryan’s voice was soft, almost a whisper. “I never hated you. If I ever made you feel that way, I’m sorry. I really am.”
He just never knew how to reach the girl who seemed like she belonged in a castle, not in his world.
Right now, standing in front of her, he felt like that kid again—the one dragging a trash bag, wandering around outside the gates, a stray looking in at the princess who was always out of reach.
He’d been so insecure back then, and that insecurity just made him awkward and weird.
Amelia just stared at him, stunned. There was so much emotion in his eyes, so much intensity, it was like the air itself was heavy with him. For a second, she almost forgot how to breathe.
She never thought the quiet, distant boy from her memories would ever stand in front of her, head bowed, sounding so vulnerable—like he was quietly begging her for a little kindness.
“Ryan, why… why did you do all this for me?” Her voice shook. “Don’t tell me it was just some silly college crush. That kind of feeling doesn’t last for years. You watched me get married, have a child… and you still took care of my mom’s grave, looked after my grandfather, even moved the entire Sadinton family house here so I’d feel at home…”
Listing it all out, Amelia felt a chill.
Seven years. Seven years she’d barely thought about Ryan, while he’d been doing all this for her. The more she thought about how much he’d given, the more guilt pressed down on her, smothering her. She wanted to run.
“Ryan…I never loved you. So why?”
