A sharp, blinding pain shot through her, leaving Amelia drenched in cold sweat. Her broken finger hung limp and useless, but she gritted her teeth and managed to wriggle it free from the rope. Fighting the agony, she snatched up the nail and hid it in her other hand.
“Don’t be scared, okay? The police are coming. And I promise, I’ll protect you,” Amelia whispered to Jinx, forcing herself to smile gently.
Right then, the van jerked to a stop.
Amelia hurried to shove her injured hand back into the ropes just as the back doors flew open. Levi stood there, his clown wig gone but his face still smeared with greasepaint, the red mouth twisted into a sick, grinning mask.
“Levi! If you want revenge, come at me! What kind of coward goes after a little girl?” Amelia yelled.
“Shut up. The kid ran right into me. It’s not my fault she wanted to play hero and block my car. Since she’s here, she can die with you,” Levi sneered.
It clicked for Amelia. Jinx must have seen Levi dragging her—unconscious—into the van. The kid was too young to know what to do, so she just ran after them, trying to help the only way she could.
Amelia silently swore she’d do whatever it took to keep Jinx safe.
Levi grabbed Amelia and dragged her out of the van, rough and heartless. He yanked the shaking Jinx out too, shoving her forward with a hard kick to the back.
Slung over Levi’s shoulder, Amelia’s head spun. She forced herself to focus, and then she saw it—the place from six years ago. Moontop. The cave where Levi had hidden Clive and demanded ransom.
The mouth of the cave gaped ahead, just like in her nightmares. Even after all this time, dried blood still stained the stone walls. Everything else was just as she remembered, untouched since that horrible night.
It was obvious—Levi had come back and set the place up exactly like it was six years ago.
He tossed Amelia onto a stone slab. Her thin back hit the freezing rock so hard she went pale with pain.
In the corner sat an iron cage—the same one they’d locked Clive in.
“Or maybe it’ll be that guy who’s always trying to save you… What was his name?” Levi narrowed his eye, thinking. “Oh, right. Ryan. You were ready to die for Clive back then. Where’s Ryan now? For all your sacrifices, look at you. Pathetic.”
Amelia stared at his twisted face—and suddenly, she started laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Levi snapped, reaching to clamp a hand over her mouth.
Amelia didn’t miss her chance. She bit down, hard.
Levi shouted and slapped her, the blow stinging her cheek. Blood filled her mouth, but she spit it out, eyes burning with a wild, unnerving calm.
“I’m laughing at you, Levi. You think you hate me for taking your eye? The real reason you’re angry is because after that, I kicked you in the balls—and now you can’t even function, can you?” Amelia’s gaze dropped to his crotch and she started laughing again, louder and sharper, full of pure contempt.
For Levi, nothing could have been a deeper humiliation.
