Shane let out a sigh of relief, rubbing his throbbing temples as he exhaled hard.
No bodies—that was the best news he could hope for.
“The river at the bottom of the mountain splits in two. The Packman family sent out their whole rescue team, even brought in helicopters. They’re searching both banks right now.”
When it came to resources, the Packmans were in a league of their own.
“Work with them. Do whatever they need,” Shane ordered.
Clive drove down the mountain on autopilot, barely registering the winding road until he hit the intersection at the bottom.
On the side of the road, there was an old van parked. An elderly woman was standing next to it, scolding a little girl.
“How many times do I have to tell you? Don’t cause trouble. You didn’t see anything, and you’re not allowed to say a word, got it?”
Just then, the quiet little girl spotted Clive’s car and suddenly dashed straight toward him, yelling, “Uncle Clive!”
Clive jerked the wheel, swerving just in time to avoid her.
His heart was still racing when the girl ran up to his window, pounding on the glass, desperate to get his attention.
He finally recognized her—she was Penny’s classmate.
He rolled down the window.
Jinx’s voice shook as she blurted out, “Uncle Clive, I saw them… Penny and her fake mom. They tricked Mrs. Sadinton and took her to—mmph!”
The old woman lunged forward and slapped a hand over Jinx’s mouth before she could finish.
“Don’t listen to her, she’s just making things up! She didn’t see anything,” the woman snapped, dragging Jinx back toward the van.
Clive just stood there, stunned, his mind blank and ears ringing.
The old woman practically hauled Jinx into the van. Through the tinted window, a man shot Clive a cold glare. Then the van sped off, disappearing down the road.
Penny and Kristen. They tricked Amelia and took her to Levi. Is that what Jinx was trying to say?
Clive’s breaths came short and harsh. He slammed his fist onto the steering wheel. His knuckles split open, blood smearing the leather, and the car horn blared so loud his head rang.
By the time he pulled himself together and tried to find the van, it was already gone.
On the drive home, he called Shane to double-check what he’d heard about Jinx.
Shane sounded tired. “That girl was lucky. She and Amelia were both taken by Levi, but the kid escaped before the explosion. We tried talking to her, but she’s terrified—only five or six. She wouldn’t say a thing. Her parents took her home to calm down.”
Clive stopped Donna as she was about to leave. “Donna, where’s Penny?”
Donna glanced upstairs, her tone suddenly colder. “Ms. Watts has her. They’ve been in Penny’s room since they got home. Haven’t come out once.”
When Donna left with Timmy, Clive headed upstairs alone.
He’d barely reached the top when Kristen stepped out of Penny’s room. She saw him—worn out and furious—and hurried over, worry etched on her face.
“Clive—”
He didn’t say a word. He grabbed her arm and pulled her straight into the study, slamming the door behind them.
“Clive, what are you—ah!”
She didn’t even finish her sentence before he slapped her hard across the face, knocking her to the floor.
Kristen clutched her cheek, staring up at him in shock. “Clive!”
His eyes blazed, red with fury, as he dragged her up by the collar.
His voice shook with anger. “Kristen, how many awful things have you done to Amelia behind my back?”
