Shane barely had time to react before the explosion’s heat slammed into him, throwing him half a meter back as soon as he stepped out of the car.
Francisco rushed up right behind him, but when he saw the mountain cave collapse in on itself with a deafening roar, he just stood there, completely stunned.
“Mr. Packman… Mr. Packman!” Francisco, who was always so calm and put-together, actually sounded panicked for the first time.
He started toward the wreckage, only for Shane to yank him back.
“Don’t! After a blast like that, the whole thing could come down again at any second!”
Francisco stumbled but caught himself, breathing hard, finally snapping out of his shock. Above them, two Packman family helicopters circled, and one of the pilots called Francisco straight away.
“Francisco, right after the explosion, a black sedan shot out of the cave. It crashed at the bottom and blew up. Shadow Guard is already checking if there was anyone inside!”
Francisco’s hand shook around his phone. He let out a shaky breath. “Find out. I want answers now. I don’t care how—alive or dead, bring them to me!”
The Packman family’s security worked with the police. An hour later, they pulled what was left of Levi from the ruins. There was no question this time—he was gone.
The medical examiner took a quick look. “He got hit hard before the rocks finished him off. He probably passed out before he died.”
But Ryan had gotten there even sooner...
Shane’s face was grim. Dread twisted in his gut as he pieced together what must have happened inside that cave.
George had been right—when Ryan lost it, he really didn’t care about living or dying.
Shane stared at the pile of rubble that used to be a cave, remembering six years ago. Amelia had walked into that cave, tiny and fragile but unbelievably calm, driven by nothing but guts and hope.
Now, six years later, same place. But what about the man she’d saved?
Shane’s thoughts churned with regret and anger.
Suddenly, shouting erupted behind him. Shane turned to see Clive trying to force his way through the police tape, fighting off two officers.
“Amelia’s my ex-wife! She’s the mother of my kids! Let me through!” Clive struggled, desperate. When he saw Shane, he latched onto him like a lifeline. “Shane!”
Clive had even forgotten Levi existed.
As a man, Shane honestly couldn’t stand him.
Clive just stood there, white as a sheet, not even trying to talk back.
He had nothing to say—he’d gotten too used to Amelia’s sacrifices, too used to taking everything she did for granted, never really noticing her pain.
Shane took a steadying breath and said, voice flat, “Salmeron, you’re not family anymore. Please leave, and let the police do their job.”
“Shane.” Clive grabbed Shane’s arm, his voice hoarse and pleading. “Whatever happens to Amelia, dead or alive, please—tell me as soon as you know. She hasn’t had anyone to count on for a long time. I’m still the father of her kids. That has to make me at least half family, right?”
Shane watched as Clive turned away, shoulders hunched, defeated. He shook his head, feeling a mix of pity and frustration.
After Clive left, one of Shane’s teammates called from down by the crashed car.
“Shane, there’s no one in the wreck. No injured people in the area either. Looks like whoever was inside jumped out before it went over.”
