She didn’t want to die, not like this. But what choice did she have? She was so tired. Everything hurt.
The bomb’s timer beside her kept ticking down. Less than two minutes left.
Amelia closed her eyes, trying to shut it all out. She remembered Donna telling her in the park to finish what she’d started. No matter what happened, if Kristen had really hurt Penny, Donna would get the proof. Clive was a mess—selfish, clueless—but one thing was real: he truly loved his kids.
Her vision blurred. Levi was getting closer, dragging a bloody machete along the cave floor, hacking at whatever got in his way. He was screaming her name like a madman.
No one would save her in time.
A single tear slipped down Amelia’s cheek.
Suddenly, she was somewhere else—in the old Sadinton house, more than twenty years ago. The whole family was there. Her parents, her grandpa, Danny—everyone. Nothing was broken. Nothing had changed.
It was just a nightmare. It had to be. And now she was finally waking up.
Her mom was waiting for her, holding a birthday cake and smiling.
“Amelia, happy birthday! Blow out the candles and make a wish.”
If only she could wake up for real. Go back to that moment, when everything was perfect.
Amelia let her eyes fall shut.
Then—BOOM. A crash so loud it rattled her bones.
She jerked her head up. A car had just crashed straight into the cave. The impact sent Levi flying. He landed hard, blood gushing from his mouth, and didn’t move.
Amelia’s heart almost stopped when she saw the license plate.
“Ryan…”
He was out of the car in a heartbeat, running toward her. Blood was streaming down his forehead, covering half his face. The car’s front bumper was wrecked, crumpled by the force of the crash.
She could picture it—him driving like a maniac to get here in time, not caring about anything but reaching her.
A gamble with almost no chance of survival.
But he was willing to risk it all—just to be with her.
She stared at him, voice shaking, tears in her eyes. “Ryan, are you crazy?”
Finally, she cried for him.
Ryan gently wiped the tear from her cheek, his touch impossibly soft.
“There’s one thing you’re wrong about.” He looked into her eyes, like he wanted her to see everything he was. “I didn’t fall for you in college. It was way before that…”
Long before you ever noticed me.
“Princess Amelia, you don’t know the half of it…”
Then the world exploded. The blast rocked the whole mountain.
