Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 541

It wouldn’t take much for someone outside to break in.

Amelia grabbed two thick sticks and wedged them against the door, making sure it was as secure as possible.

Ryan watched her from behind. The whole time, not once did she let go of that knife.

Once the door was barricaded, Amelia finally turned to him. She kept her voice low, just in case anyone was listening through the walls. “Those guys out there—they’re wanted. We have to be careful. One of them got shot, and it’s bad. They need me to keep him alive, so I don’t think they’ll mess with us tonight. If we can just make it to morning, Shane and the others should be able to find us…”

She kept talking, not even noticing how much her hands were shaking.

Ryan’s eyes softened, deep and full of quiet concern. He stepped closer, gently taking the knife from her trembling grip.

There was blood on the blade.

Whatever happened out there, it must have been awful.

Without saying a word, Ryan pulled her into his arms. He bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to her hair. “It’s okay,” he murmured, voice thick with worry. “You’re safe now.”

It was like something inside Amelia finally snapped loose. All that tension she’d been holding onto just unraveled.

She pressed her face into his chest, breathing him in. Wrapped in his arms, the world suddenly felt a little less scary.

“Ryan…” she whispered, her voice muffled against his shirt.

“Yeah?”

She looked up at him. Her eyes were glossy, the tip of her nose a little red, but she was still shining, still herself. Even in this mess, he didn’t look pathetic—just heartbreakingly beautiful, like a prince knocked down by life. No wonder that woman was so drawn to him.

“That woman… did she bring you medicine?” Amelia asked quietly.

Ryan nodded, calm as ever. “Yeah. I took it already.”

Amelia hesitated. She didn’t want to be too blunt.

“I heard them arguing outside. She didn’t… do anything to you, did she?”

Ryan caught on right away, raising his eyebrows and giving her a teasing smile.

“You mean, did she feed me the medicine, or are you asking if she put her hands all over me?”

Amelia’s eyes went wide. “She touched you? Where? She didn’t hurt your wound, did she?”
