He slipped around to the back of the woodshed. There was a small wooden window in the wall, and a bald guy was peeking through, trying to see what was going on inside. But the second he leaned in, something shot out of the darkness and hit him right in the face.
His scream echoed through the yard. Inside, Ryan quickly covered Amelia’s ears.
Night was fading, and the first pale light streaked across the sky.
At the Baker family estate, Felix was jogging around the artificial lake when his phone buzzed. He stopped, pressed his earpiece, and answered the call.
“Any luck finding them?” His breathing stayed steady.
“Mr. Baker, Ms. Sadinton still hasn’t turned up... But there’s news. The Packman family has sent out a huge search party too. Word is, Mr. Ryan Packman and Ms. Sadinton went missing together—”
Felix paused, caught off guard. “Ryan? Are you sure?”
Elsewhere, Francisco and his team reached the riverbank.
He picked up a scrap of white fabric from the ground. The material was high-end, the kind used for custom tailoring. Francisco knew it well.
A whole night of worry gave way to a tiny bit of hope.
“Mr. Packman and Ms. Sadinton must be close. Search everywhere. Don’t miss a single spot!”
When Amelia woke up, Ryan was gone.
She bolted upright, heart pounding. The wooden bar that had braced the door was gone. Anxiety hit her like a wave. She scrambled off the straw bedding and rushed outside—then stopped short.
Ryan stood there, leaning on a wooden stick like a cane, a bowl of noodles in his other hand. The old kitchen with its clay stove was behind him.
“You’re up. Eat something.” Ryan handed her the bowl, his face calm and unreadable.
Seeing him safe made Amelia’s whole body relax. She suddenly realized how hungry she was.
But then the bald guy saw her. Panic twisted his face. He started banging his head on the ground and begged for mercy, though his words were almost impossible to understand. When he opened his mouth, Amelia saw the blood—and realized most of his teeth were gone.
She stumbled back, terrified, nearly falling. A strong hand caught her before she could hit the ground.
She turned—Ryan was right behind her, steady and protective. She grabbed his arm, panic rising fast. “It had to be Dash—those guys are fighting each other! They’re vicious. We have to leave, now!”
But Ryan just held her hand tighter and didn’t move.
On the floor, the bald man caught sight of Ryan. The fear in his eyes was unmistakable. He tried to crawl away, shaking all over, desperate to get as far from Ryan as possible.
Watching him, something clicked in Amelia’s mind.
She looked up at Ryan, wide-eyed, shock written all over her face.
