Amelia rummaged through the kitchen and finally found a box of matches. She struck one, then tossed it into the old woodshed.
The dry hay inside caught fire instantly. Flames shot up in seconds, filling the shed with wild light and thick, choking smoke.
She didn’t feel sorry for fugitives, but as a doctor, the idea of burning two people alive was more than she could handle.
Francisco and Shane would definitely see the fire and come looking. Someone like Big Mike, always running from trouble, would probably see the flames and stay away, afraid of being caught. But there was no way to be sure—he might not leave his two men behind.
Just to be safe, Amelia helped Ryan up so they could get out of there as fast as possible.
She kept her voice low. “I saw the lay of the land on my way here. There’s a little hill up ahead with thick grass—we can hide there. Ryan, we both have to make it.”
“Oh, what a tragic little love story. I’m honestly moved,” a woman’s sharp, mocking voice shot out from behind them.
A chill ran down Amelia’s back.
She hadn’t expected Samantha—the one the bald guy called “boss’s wife”—to come back at a time like this.
Samantha strutted closer, swaying her hips and aiming a sleek black pistol right at them.
Bruises colored her mouth and eyes, and a fresh red handprint stood out on her cheek. Clearly, she’d been slapped and stormed off in a rage.
Ryan stepped in front of Amelia, shielding her. His eyes locked on Samantha, cold and dangerous.
Samantha’s lips twisted in a smirk, but her eyes burned with jealousy as she looked at the two of them standing together.
“Last night I practically threw myself at you and you humiliated me. If you two are so in love, why not die together?”
Amelia quietly pressed a knife into Ryan’s hand.
She called out, her voice shaking, “Samantha, please, don’t shoot. We’ll do anything you want, just don’t kill us!”
Samantha’s sneer deepened, her gaze lingering on Ryan’s striking face with a hint of regret. “If only your man had been this obedient last night…”
She clicked off the safety.
Right then, Amelia’s eyes went wide with fear. She stared over Samantha’s shoulder and screamed, “Big Mike!”
Samantha spun around, startled.
In that instant, Ryan’s knife flashed through the air, hitting her straight in the throat.
