Amelia held her son close and, just like that, every ache and pain seemed to vanish. She shut her eyes for a second and smiled. “The second I see you, it doesn’t hurt anymore. Honest.”
Timmy clung to her neck, his voice thick with guilt. “Mom, I didn’t protect you… I should’ve stayed with you the whole time.”
Amelia’s eyes stung with tears—relief tangled with heartache.
Both were her children, her own flesh and blood, but how could they feel so different? Timmy was her little angel, always bringing her comfort. Penny, though… Penny was the one she could never seem to reach, no matter how hard she tried.
Sure, hypnosis and all those drugs could mess with someone’s mind, but when Penny was brought to the amusement park, she wasn’t under Kristen’s control anymore. If Penny really loved her, his real mother, he wouldn’t have just stood there and watched Levi hit her without even flinching. In Penny’s heart, the only mother he truly saw was Kristen.
“Timmy, this isn’t your fault.” Amelia gently held his face and wiped his tears away. “You’ve done so much already. You’re still just a little boy who needs someone to watch over him. When you’re older, you can protect Mom, okay? Don’t worry, it’s just a couple of scrapes. I’ll be just fine.”
“Really?”
“Of course, sweetie.” Amelia kissed his cheek. “If you give me a kiss too, I’ll feel all better.”
Timmy giggled and planted a big kiss on her face.
Amelia’s heart melted completely. “See? I’m totally fine now.”
Timmy finally smiled again, the sadness lifting from his face.
“But Mom, you still have to stay here and rest in the hospital for a few more days,” he said, serious as ever.
