“No, I don’t want any of this!” Kristen ripped the contract to pieces and threw herself against Clive, holding on for dear life. “Clive, I don’t care about anything else. I just want you!”
Clive took a slow, tired breath and tried to pull her arms away, but Kristen only clung tighter.
“Clive, did Amelia say something to you? Don’t listen to her!” Kristen’s voice was trembling, frantic. “You know she hates me for taking you away, and she can’t stand how close I am to Penny. How could I ever hurt Penny? Clive, you know I’ve always loved her—like she was my own daughter!”
“It’s Amelia, she’s the one trying to turn you against me. She just wants you back for herself!” Kristen’s grip tightened, her fear almost suffocating.
The past few days had left Clive completely drained. He remembered the cold, distant look on Amelia’s face and let out a dry, bitter laugh.
She wanted him back? If only.
The truth was, Amelia was really done with him this time.
Kristen was crying so hard she looked utterly pitiful. “Clive, I’ve loved you since college. All these years, I’ve stayed by your side. You know I’d give up anything for you—even my life…”
Her tears grated on his nerves.
He had never been so fed up with a woman’s crying.
He used to think Amelia was too serious, too strong. She always seemed to have everything under control, even his problems. At work, people respected her more than him.
Amelia rarely cried. Almost never in front of him.
