Shane hit the gas and pulled up fast, heart racing, only to see three cars lined up on the side of the road. The one parked right in front of Amelia looked like it was just waiting to take her away.

“Ms. Sadinton! Who are you people?” Shane jumped out, slamming his door and moving toward them, voice sharp and demanding.

But before he could get any closer, a group of men in black suits stepped out from a dark sedan at the back, cutting him off in total silence.

Amelia tried to go to Shane, wanting to explain, but Paxton slid smoothly between them.

“Ms. Sadinton, please get in the car. I’ll deal with this.” His tone was polite enough, but he didn’t budge an inch. He was a wall, and there was no getting around him.

Paxton didn’t have to say whose orders he was following. He spoke for George.

Amelia glanced into the car at George, her stomach dropping. He looked fragile, almost harmless, but she knew better. This was a man who controlled everything and everyone around him. The only reason he let Ryan come back and share a little power was because he needed Ryan’s blood.

She climbed into the car. The door slammed shut behind her, locking her in.

George didn’t wait for Paxton to join them. He spoke right away, calm and cold. “Drive.”

Both side windows were covered by thick curtains, blocking out the world, and a tinted divider slid up between the front and back seats. Now it was just Amelia and George in a closed-off space that felt way too small.

Amelia shifted away from him, keeping her eyes on the floor. “How’s Ryan?”

George barely looked up from his phone, scrolling like he had all the time in the world. “Don’t worry. He’s not going to die. Even if he wanted to, the Packman family wouldn’t let that happen.”

The way he said it made Amelia’s skin crawl.
