“What’s up, Clive? Why are you two just standing there?” Caroline called out as she walked in.
Penny had spent last night at the old Salmeron house. When Caroline went to pick her up from school, Clive called and suggested they all go out for dinner. He’d take Penny home afterward.
The restaurant looked great online and Penny loved animals, so Caroline had made a reservation here.
She’d just finished parking and came in to find Clive’s tall figure holding Penny’s hand, both of them just standing by the entrance.
Caroline figured Clive was just looking for the table she’d booked. “Clive, I asked for a window seat—” she started, but then she caught sight of Felix sitting not too far away. Even from the side, she recognized him instantly.
Her heart thudded wildly in her chest, but then she saw the woman sitting at Felix’s table.
“Amelia?!” Caroline blurted, her whole face changing.
What on earth was Amelia doing with Felix?
She looked again. Amelia wasn’t alone—Timmy was there too, and a little girl sat next to him. Felix was peeling shrimp and putting it into the girl’s bowl, looking totally at ease.
Caroline’s frown deepened.
Since when did Felix have a daughter that age?
“Clive, what is going on?” she whispered. “Why is Amelia having dinner with Felix? And who’s that little girl?”
“Come on,” Clive said, cutting her off and leading Penny toward their table.
Caroline shot Amelia a glare, but all she could do was follow.
She still didn’t know what was going on with Kristen, and Clive had no interest in explaining. If Caroline found out, she’d tell everyone in the family, and he really didn’t need that kind of drama.
Their dad Bailey had nearly worked himself into the hospital during the last round of fundraising and was still recovering. It was a critical time, and Clive wanted everything to stay calm.
“Kristen’s busy with something. She won’t be around these couple of days,” he said.
“What could be more important? Aren’t you and Penny supposed to be her priorities now?” Caroline’s eyes narrowed as she suddenly thought of something. “Wait, is she off getting her wedding dress? You two are getting married soon, right?”
Clive just said, “Let’s eat,” sounding even colder than before.
Caroline rolled her eyes. With that attitude, they’d obviously had a fight.
Honestly, what couple planning a wedding didn’t?
