“If Penny’s too busy, I can help you guys out,” Caroline offered with a bright smile. “I don’t have anything else going on anyway.”

But before she could finish, Clive slammed his fork down, his face suddenly cold. The sound made Penny jump in her seat.

“Can you just quit it already?”

Caroline looked at him, totally confused and a little hurt. “What did I do? Why are you snapping at me?”

Clive let out a tense breath. “Just stay out of my business, okay?”

Caroline pouted, crossing her arms. “Fine, whatever… But at least tell me, that girl hanging around Felix—who is she, anyway?”

Clive didn’t get a chance to reply before Penny cut in, her voice low and sulky. “That’s Jinx. She’s in my class…” She hesitated, remembering how Amelia had cleaned Jinx’s hands earlier, then added, “She’s always following me around. If it wasn’t for me, nobody in class would play with her. Everyone says she’s the kid nobody wants, always dirty and alone.”

Penny’s frustration kept building until she finally burst out, “Jinx is just a little beggar!”

Only beggars went around picking up things other people didn’t want.

“She’s not my friend!” Penny shouted, covering her ears. She jumped down from her chair, face red with anger. “I’m not eating anymore. I’m going to play in the castle!”

Clive rubbed his temples, looking frustrated, and started to go after her when his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, his expression changing.

“Caroline, keep an eye on Penny for me. I need to take this call.”
