“I did not!” Jinx’s cheeks burned bright red as she argued, her voice shaking. “I’m not some orphan. My mom and dad just went far away for work, that’s all!”

Amelia had only just learned the truth about Jinx’s real parents, and her heart ached for the little girl.

“Jinx, don’t listen to her,” Amelia said softly. She knelt down and wrapped her arms around Jinx, gently wiping away her tears.

Even Timmy pulled free from Penny’s hand and came over to stand next to Jinx, disappointment clouding his face as he looked at his favorite little sister.

“Penny, how could you say something like that?”

Penny balled her fists, shouting with a mix of anger and hurt, “Jinx, you don’t even have parents! Ms. Arnold said your mom and dad are dead—”

“That’s enough!”

Amelia couldn’t stand another second of it. She slapped Penny across the face.

It wasn’t especially hard, but the sound of it shattered something in the room.

Amelia stared at Penny’s shocked, teary face, her own heart twisting up inside.

“Amelia!” Caroline rushed over, just in time to see what happened. She checked Penny quickly, then raised her hand to slap Amelia in return.

“How dare you! Who do you think you are, hitting my niece?”

Before Caroline’s hand could fall, Amelia caught her wrist midair and pushed her away, glaring at her with cold disgust.

“Every one of you in the Salmeron family is to blame for how Penny turned out.”

Caroline’s face flushed with anger. “You—”

“What’s going on?” Felix walked over, just finished paying the bill.

He was dressed in a relaxed suit today, tall and sharp, his presence instantly grabbing everyone’s attention. Caroline’s heart skipped a beat when she saw him.
