Penny clung to Caroline’s shoulder, her eyes growing red and glassy as she tried to hold back tears.

At the top of the stairs, Felix ran straight into Clive, who was on his way up.

“Mr. Baker.” Clive gave a stiff nod, but his gaze drifted to Amelia standing behind Felix and lingered there for a second too long.

Felix’s smile was all sharp edges, no warmth at all. “Salmeron, I have to say, your family’s manners are really something else.”

Clive frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Why don’t you ask your wonderful daughter and your darling little sister?” Felix clearly didn’t want to waste another minute arguing.

He caught the look Clive was giving Amelia and immediately stepped to the side, motioning for Amelia to take Timmy and head down first. Felix fell back, making sure to block Clive from getting anywhere near her.

Timmy waved. “Bye, Dad!”

Clive watched them go—Felix with Jinx in his arms, Amelia holding Timmy’s hand. The four of them looked just like a picture-perfect family.

That spot, right next to Amelia, it was supposed to be his.

“Clive!” Caroline came over with Penny in her arms, fuming. “Why didn’t you tell me Jinx was Felix’s daughter?”

“What?” Clive’s frown deepened. “That’s impossible. Felix hasn’t even had a real girlfriend, never mind a wife. How could he suddenly have a daughter? Unless… she’s illegitimate?”

Caroline nodded, totally convinced. “Exactly. She has to be. A secret daughter!”

No wonder Amelia cared so much about Jinx—even to the point of slapping her own daughter. How calculating.

Caroline stomped her foot, frustrated. “If I’d known that little brat was Felix’s daughter, I would’ve treated her a lot better!”

Clive just shook his head and reached out to take Penny, scooping her up gently.

“What, you want to run over to the Baker family and be someone’s stepmom now? You, a proper young lady?”

“So what if I do?” Caroline shot back. “Kristen’s been Penny and Timmy’s stepmom for years, hasn’t she?”
