At the intersection, Clive stopped the car just behind the yellow line. He glanced in the rearview mirror at his daughter, her little face scrunched up and tear-stained. His brows pulled together and his voice turned serious. “Penny, you’re the one who decided not to see your mom. We have to own our choices.”
As soon as those words left his mouth, Clive felt a dull ache in his chest. He knew all too well—he had to live with his own choices, too.
When they got home, two nannies were already waiting by the door. Clive didn’t even bother getting out, just watched Penny go inside, then drove off toward the office.
On the way, his phone lit up with Cameron’s name. Clive glanced at it, then declined the call without hesitation.
Meanwhile, in a hospital room, Cameron stared at his phone, listening to the cold automated message: “The number you dialed is unavailable.” His expression tightened and he tried calling again, but this time, the phone was off.
“Clive’s not picking up, is he?” Kristen sat propped up in bed, and from Cameron’s face, she already knew the answer.
“He’s probably just busy.” Cameron hated seeing Kristen cry, and his voice softened as he tried to reassure her. “Cloudcrest is about to get a new round of funding. This is Clive’s busiest time. He’ll come see you tomorrow, I promise. And if he doesn’t, I’ll drag him over myself.”
Kristen lowered her head, forcing a weak smile before tears slid down her cheeks.
“Cameron, you’re the only one… You’ve always been so good to me, all these years.”
“That’s because you deserve it,” Cameron said quietly.
Kristen looked up at him, eyes shining with tears. “You’ve heard everything about my family. You don’t judge me? After what my parents did…”
“Of course not!” Cameron cut her off, reaching out to gently wipe away her tears. “I only care about the Kristen I know. You’re kind. You’re good. Whatever happened with your parents isn’t your fault. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
“And besides, Amelia isn’t even Mr. Watts’s real daughter. Her mom cheated, and Amelia’s the result. The whole Sadinton family kept it from him for years. Was Mr. Watts just supposed to keep putting up with her, after all that? How much is one person supposed to take?”
Cameron had friends at the station, so he already knew what went down with the Watts family. Sure, Hank had tried to poison Tony—there was no denying that—but Kristen had told him how her dad was forced to marry into the Sadinton family because of old family debts.
After he married in, Amelia’s mom Norma betrayed him. Even though Norma was long gone, Hank could never get over it. In the end, he did something terrible, but Cameron could almost understand why.
