Ryan took a shaky breath, found his phone, and dialed. After a few rings, someone picked up.
Aaron’s voice was as flat as ever. “Still breathing?”
Ryan rolled his eyes. “Nope, I’m calling you from the afterlife.”
Aaron didn’t miss a beat. “If you couldn’t take me down while you were alive, I’m even less worried about you now. What’s up?”
“I need you to deliver the deed and keys for the Sadinton place to Amelia. She’s at the house right now.”
“Amelia?” Aaron paused, for once caught off guard. After a moment, he got it. “You mean Amelia? Alright, I’ll send someone.”
“Thanks. That’s it. Hanging up.”
“Ryan,” Aaron stopped him, his tone suddenly more serious. “The Genesis Project is officially underway. I heard Mr. Sadinton woke up for a bit. His research basically built the foundation for this whole thing. If he doesn’t make it to the end, we’ll carve his name in stone. You—”
“Don’t bother with me,” Ryan cut him off, wiping blood from his mouth, sounding almost casual. “I’m not interested in being anyone’s hero.”
Aaron got it. Ryan always had his own motives.
“Ryan, are you going to make it?”
Ryan pressed his hand to the bullet wound in his chest. His face was calm, almost gentle. “I promised her I’d survive.”
How he’d manage that was a whole different story.

Amelia waited for about half an hour.
Eventually, a sleek black SUV rolled up. A man in a tailored suit stepped out. He looked bookish but had that unmistakable power vibe.
