Diana didn’t hesitate to say yes. She grumbled under her breath, “I’m dying to see what’s so great about him that you’re already interested after such a short time.”
Amelia just smiled and didn’t answer.
Back in college, Diana was always the firecracker of the group. She’d stand up to anyone, no matter who they were—even the professors got a taste of her attitude. The only person who ever seemed to throw her off was Ryan.
If Ryan was anywhere near, Diana would instantly go quiet and act all shy, like a nervous little bird.
Amelia never could figure out why Diana was only nervous around Ryan.
But now wasn’t the time to dig into that mystery. Tomorrow, the two of them would meet face to face, and Amelia figured she’d see for herself.
She made her way over to a big old door and gave it a hard push. Sure enough, behind it was a room packed with the books her grandpa Tony had been collecting for years.
Amelia took a closer look.
Some of the books were old medical texts, but there were also a bunch on things like the I Ching, mysticism, and other strange, esoteric topics.
Since when was Grandpa into this kind of supernatural stuff?
“Diana, I’ll take this side. Can you handle the shelves across from me? Help me pull out anything that looks like it’s about medicine.”
“Sure thing.”
They split up and got to work. Diana was flipping through books when she didn’t notice a small stone bump on the floor. She tripped and, trying to steady herself, grabbed a black cat-shaped ornament next to the shelf. She expected it to be heavy and solid, but it moved easily in her hand—way lighter than it looked.
Suddenly, a loud rumble shook the room. A crack tore across the floor.
Amelia and Diana both jumped back. The crack stopped when it was about a yard wide and two yards long. Heart pounding, Amelia crept closer and looked down. What she saw made her drop to her knees in shock.
Down beneath the floor, encased in a massive block of amber, was a young woman, lifelike and perfectly preserved.
Amelia stared, frozen. Then her legs gave out and she sat hard on the floor.
