Amelia went quiet, her mind racing.
A moment later, her phone lit up with Ryan’s call.
“Looking for George?” He didn’t bother with a hello.
“I need a favor from him,” Amelia said honestly.
“What kind of favor?” Ryan sounded impatient. “So that cripple can help, but I can’t?”
Amelia let out a small laugh. “I need him to test something out a few times first. That’s the only way I’ll know how the treatment works best for you.”
Ryan was quiet for a second, but he caught on fast. “George isn’t exactly trustworthy. Be careful with him.”
“If he was a good guy, I wouldn’t need to ask him,” Amelia replied softly. “Everyone has desires. George’s is survival. That’s how I know he’ll take the bait.”
Ryan was silent for a little while, then asked, “And what about you?”
He always wore his heart on his sleeve, but what about her?
Amelia took a slow breath. “I want a lot of things. I want to build something for myself. I want the people I care about to be safe and happy...”
Ryan didn’t look surprised. In fact, he liked hearing about her dreams. It meant her world was expanding, getting brighter.
He was about to say something, but Amelia’s voice turned soft and sincere, almost like a prayer.
“But right now, what I want most is to heal you, Ryan. And if I could ask for anything else, it’d be for you to live a long, long life.”
Ryan didn’t say anything at first. Then, with a faint laugh, he said, “Amelia, has anyone ever told you? You’re really good at making people feel special.”
Amelia blinked. “What? I wasn’t—”
Before she could finish, Ryan sent her George’s number.
Ryan: If he gives you trouble, let me know. I can’t kill him, but I can definitely rough him up.
He even added a knife emoji.
Amelia nodded. “Mr. Baker couldn’t come today?”
“He got called in early this morning. Had to leave before sunrise.” The nanny sighed, worry obvious on her face. “Another frontline peacekeeping mission. Hostage rescue.”
Jinx didn’t say anything, but the spark in her eyes faded just as quickly as it had appeared.
Amelia understood immediately why Jinx seemed down. She reached out and ruffled Jinx’s hair. “Sweetheart, your Uncle Felix is truly amazing. He’ll come back safe, I promise. And I bet he’ll bring you something special.”
“Really?” Jinx looked up with big, teary eyes.
“Of course,” Amelia replied warmly. “Have I ever lied to you?”
That finally got a big smile from Jinx.
“When Uncle Felix gets back, Mrs. Sadinton, can you bring Timmy and Penny and go somewhere fun with us? Penny was upset last time because we didn’t invite her to lunch. If we bring her along this time, she’ll be happy.”
No matter how Penny had treated her before, Jinx didn’t hold a grudge. In her mind, Penny was just upset because she’d been left out.
