Amelia looked at Jinx’s sweet, innocent little face and couldn’t help but smile.
“I’ll do my best,” she promised.
“Oh, and Mrs. Sadinton, there’s a family day at school this weekend. They want parents to come and play games,” Jinx said, trying to sound brave. “Ms. Arnold said I can help out as a little volunteer. I’ll check in the parents and help them find their seats. Mrs. Sadinton, if you have some time after being with Penny, would you come play with me too?”
Jinx tried to act casual, but her big eyes sparkled with hope.
She really envied Penny for having a mom like Mrs. Sadinton. But Jinx knew Mrs. Sadinton was Penny and Timmy’s mom, not hers. She couldn’t steal someone else’s mom. Just borrowing her for a little while was enough.
Amelia’s heart twisted for her.
“Of course, I’ll be there,” she promised. As she spoke, she caught a glimpse of Penny a few yards away, standing stiff and glaring in their direction.
Amelia’s mind flashed back to the day she’d slapped her daughter. She hesitated, but then stepped toward Penny.
“Penny?”
Penny turned her face away, pretending not to hear.
“Penny,” Clive called out as he strode over, spotting Amelia by the car. He paused briefly. “Penny, let’s go say hi to your mom, okay?”
He took Penny’s hand—she followed, clearly not happy about it—and they walked toward Amelia.
Just as they reached the back door, it suddenly flew open from the inside, slamming right into Clive’s leg.
Clive winced and looked over. Diana stepped out, sunglasses on, spraying perfume everywhere. She pinched her nose and muttered sarcastically.
“Oh my god, what’s that smell? Did someone just open up a bottle of scumbag cologne out here?”
Amelia almost burst out laughing.
Clive frowned. “Penny, we’ve talked about this, remember? You—”
Penny’s temper flared. She yanked her hand away, covered her ears, and refused to listen.
Clive gave a helpless sigh and picked Penny up. He glanced at Amelia, wanting to say something, but Amelia looked away, smiling at Timmy as he ran over. Diana immediately stepped between her and Clive.
With her heels on, Diana was tall enough to block Clive’s view completely.
“Mom!” Timmy spotted Clive nearby. “Dad! Penny!”
Clive waved. “Timmy, come here. Dad wants to talk to you.”
Timmy looked at Amelia, hesitating. She nodded, and only then did he walk over.
“Dad, what do you want to talk about?”
