Cameron squeezed the test results so tightly his hands shook. He stared at Clive’s face, which looked like he could explode any second, and stepped back, fumbling for words.
“Clive, let me explain—”
“Hand it over.” Clive’s voice was flat and cold, leaving no room for argument as he held out his hand.
Cameron hesitated, but Clive was done waiting. Without another word, he spun around and stormed straight toward Kristen’s hospital room.
Panic hit Cameron. He rushed after Clive, heart pounding.
Inside, Kristen was video chatting with Penny on the backup phone Cameron had given her. Clive had already blocked Kristen’s number on Penny’s phone—he didn’t want them talking at all.
But Kristen wasn’t giving up that easily. She knew Clive absolutely adored Penny, and as long as she stayed connected to his daughter, she had a reason to stick around in his life.
She believed in herself. Sooner or later, she’d win Clive back. And if she smoothed things over with the court, her mom, Bianca, probably wouldn’t get too harsh a sentence either.
“Momma Kristen, when are you coming home?” Penny sounded down. “Can you pick me up from school?”
The thought of Amelia and Jinx being all buddy-buddy made Penny grumpy. If Kristen came to pick her up, she could rub it in their faces.
Kristen sighed, gentle. “Penny, you have to ask your dad. Momma Kristen would love to pick you up, but I’m not sure your daddy will let me—he’s still upset with me, sweetheart. But you know how much he loves you. Try sweet-talking him a little… or, if you want, pretend you’re on a hunger strike and scare him a bit.”
Penny considered it, then nodded. “Okay!”
All she wanted was for Kristen to pick her up—especially if Amelia got to see it.
Kristen hung up, looking pleased.
A moment later, the door slammed open.
Clive stood there, back already. Kristen’s heart leapt—was he here to take her home? Had Penny convinced him that fast?
“Clive, you’re back?”
Clive’s face was like stone, his eyes ice cold. “Come with me.”
Kristen’s heart fluttered.
Was she finally going home?
She hopped out of bed. “Clive, wait, let me change and grab my stuff—ah!” Before she could finish, Clive crossed the room in two strides, grabbed her arm, and yanked her toward the door. He was rough, nearly dragging her off her feet.
His grip was so tight, Kristen thought her arm might dislocate.
“Clive, you’re hurting me!” she cried out, her face turning white. But Clive didn’t seem to hear her at all, just pulled her along the corridor.
They hadn’t gone far when Cameron caught up.
“Clive! Let her go!”
Clive turned on him, voice a low growl. “Get out of my way.” The anger rolling off him made people peek out of their rooms to see what was happening.
