“What do you want to do?” Amelia asked, her eyes bright and soft with a gentle smile.
Honestly, she wasn’t that different from the girl she’d been at eighteen. The only thing that had changed was that now, she finally let him into her world.
Ryan didn’t care what they did, as long as he was with her.
He drove Amelia back to Sycamore Court. The house was quiet. The staff had all gone home, leaving just the two of them.
“Wanna watch a movie?” Ryan suggested.
Amelia blinked. “Why not go out to the theater? It’s got a way better vibe.”
Ryan raised an eyebrow and leaned in closer, giving her a look that was half amused, half helpless. “Ms. Sadinton, I just want to be with you. The movie’s not the point.”
Amelia’s face warmed as she let out a soft “Oh.” She scooted over to the couch, turned on the TV, and started scrolling through movies.
Ryan headed off to the kitchen to fix some snacks and cut up fruit.
Amelia glanced over her shoulder and caught sight of him slicing fruit at the counter. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and the knife tapped out a crisp, steady rhythm on the cutting board.
For some reason, whenever she saw Ryan doing these everyday things so skillfully, her chest tightened a little. It reminded her of the boy he used to be—the wild blond hair, working hard and silent in that greasy kitchen years ago.
She knew something about his past, about all the struggles he’d been through. But there was so much more she didn’t know.
He brought the snacks and fruit over, all her favorites.
She’d picked a classic horror movie.
As the opening credits rolled and the creepy ghost girl started crawling out of the screen, Ryan glanced at Amelia. Just as he expected, she had her face buried in her hands, peeking through a tiny gap between her fingers.
Terrified, but loving it anyway.
He was debating whether to switch to something else when his phone buzzed.
Ryan glanced down. On his way to pick up Amelia, he’d been so nervous he’d texted Nathan for advice: Where do you take someone on a first date? Nathan’s dating history could fill a book, after all. Nathan hadn’t replied at the time, but now a message popped up.
Nathan: [Ryan, are you and Amelia finally dating?! Hahaha, trust me—take her to a horror movie. When she gets scared, just pull her in and tell her in your sexiest voice: ‘Babe, I’m here.’]
Ryan stared at the screen, speechless.
Why did he even ask Nathan?
He tossed his phone aside.
The movie kept playing, and Amelia had curled herself into a little ball next to him. She looked so easy to hold.
The thought had barely crossed his mind when Amelia suddenly scooted right into his arms. She didn’t say a word, just found a comfy spot and burrowed in even closer.
Ryan froze. His arms went around her, but he hardly dared hold her tight.
She was like a kitten—soft and warm and sweet-smelling.
She was the kind of beautiful dream that felt too fragile to touch, like if he squeezed her even a little, he’d wake up.
After a long moment, Ryan bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
He barely watched the movie at all. Most of the time, his eyes were on her.
His princess was making a space for him in her future.
When Ryan dropped her off at her building, they ran right into Timmy and Donna coming out of the front door with the trash.
All four of them met on the sidewalk.
“Oh, this must be Mr. Packman!” Donna said with a grin, immediately noticing that Ryan was holding Amelia’s hand—and carrying her purse in his other hand.
Donna looked even more approving.
Clive had never carried her bag, not once. Men who carried bags were the real keepers.
Amelia got a little flustered and let go of Ryan’s hand.
“Timmy, this is Uncle Ryan. You’ve met him before.”
Ryan crouched down to Timmy’s level. “Hi Timmy. Good to see you again.”
He held out his hand.
Timmy, serious as ever, shook it.
He turned to Amelia. “Mom, you and Donna go inside. I need to talk to Mr. Packman.”
Amelia blinked, surprised.
She was just about to say something when Ryan spoke up. “Amelia, I’ll bring Timmy back upstairs in a minute.”
