Klaus clenched his jaw, forcing out a cold laugh. “I told her to lay low for a few years—it was for her own good. Don’t kid yourself. The internet never forgets. The second she has anything to do with the Baker family, people will drag up every mistake she’s ever made and rip her apart all over again. And it won’t just be her—the whole Salmeron family will have to share the shame!”
“How is that Caroline’s fault?” Mrs. Salmeron shot to her feet, her voice rising with anger. “She’s still just a kid—what does she know about any of this? She just wanted to help you, but it was Amelia, that manipulative witch, who set her up and ruined her! You didn’t even go after Amelia, just let her walk away, and now you want to blame Caroline?”
“A kid?” Klaus let out a bitter laugh. “She’s only a year younger than Amelia. What kind of kid is that? What can she even do, honestly? Fine. If she wants to chase after Felix so badly, I won’t stop her. Let her go. When she’s hit every wall and learned the hard way, maybe then she’ll understand what she’s really worth.”
He finished, shot a glare at Clive, and stormed out of the room.
“Dad!” Clive called after him, rubbing his temples in frustration. He turned to his mom. “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll find out where Felix is.”
Clive pulled out his phone, made a few calls, and quickly got an answer. The color drained from his face.
“What? Felix went on a peacekeeping mission in the Madeira conflict zone?”
The moment she heard “conflict zone,” Mrs. Salmeron’s eyes rolled back and she almost collapsed. Clive rushed to steady her, gently reviving her.
Mrs. Salmeron started wailing, tears streaming down her face. “Caroline! My poor girl! She’s never even been to a bad neighborhood, let alone a war zone. How could she survive somewhere like that? What if… what if she gets caught in the crossfire?”
Her panic only grew the more she spoke.
Clive tried to calm her. “Mom, relax. Caroline’s never gone through anything tough—she’ll never make it on the front lines. And it’s not like just anyone can get into a war zone. She’ll probably wander around, spend a little money, and then come home on her own.”
“Are you sure?” Mrs. Salmeron gripped his hand, searching his face for reassurance.
“Yes, I promise. I’ll have people look for her and bring her back safe.”
Mrs. Salmeron finally started to calm down, her tears slowing. “Clive, what would I do without you?” Only then did she notice how much weight he’d lost—not just recently, but ever since the divorce. He was like a different person now.
Her heart twisted for him. And with all the gossip about his broken engagement with Kristen, things had only gotten messier. She’d tried to ask about it, but he always dodged her questions.
She squeezed his hand, her eyes full of worry. “Clive, if there’s anything you want to talk about, tell me. Don’t keep it all inside. Did you and Kristen have a fight? Is it Amelia again? Is she still bothering you?”
Mrs. Salmeron stared at him, completely stunned, her disbelief written all over her face.
“Clive, what are you talking about? I’m your mother! How could I ever hurt you? Amelia’s the outsider!”
Clive’s voice was cold. “Someday Caroline will get married. Would you want her in-laws to treat her the way you treated Amelia?”
“Caroline is nothing like that country bumpkin!”
Clive gave a hollow laugh. “Maybe. But to the Baker family, maybe Caroline is just as much of a ‘bumpkin’ to them.”
He didn’t bother saying anything else. He turned to leave, pausing at the doorway. “I’ll do everything I can to bring Caroline home. Please get some rest. And one more thing…”
He drew in a shaky breath, his voice rough. “From now on, please stay out of my love life. I was the one who let Amelia down. She’s still Penny and Timmy’s mother. In this house, I don’t ever want to hear anyone speak badly about her again.”
