After hanging up, Cameron headed out to meet Kristen.
Yeah, Kristen had messed up, but at the end of the day, she was just a girl blinded by love. She’d already paid the price—Clive had called off their engagement, her parents were both in jail, and if she left Alson Creek, where else did she even have left to go?
Cameron couldn’t shake the worry building in his chest. He sped up, only to get tripped by a leg shooting out from the shadows as he rounded the corner.
He barely caught himself, stumbling and almost dropping to his knees. He managed to steady himself, cheeks burning with anger and embarrassment, and spun around—only to see Clive leaning against the wall, cigarette between his fingers, watching him with that cool, unreadable stare.
“Where are you off to in such a rush? Running to Kristen?” Clive’s voice dripped with sarcasm, not just aimed at Cameron, but at the guy he used to be, too. He knew what it was like—he’d once run straight to Kristen with just one late-night call.
Cameron was just repeating his own old mistakes.
“Clive, I get that you’re angry with Kristen. She screwed up, yeah, and your marriage fell apart because of it. But hasn’t she suffered enough?” Cameron couldn’t take Clive’s icy, almost cruel attitude. “She lied, sure, but does that wipe out everything good she ever did for you? All she gave up? And let’s be honest—would you and Amelia have really lasted if Kristen had never been around?”
Clive stared down at the burnt-out cigarette in his hand, letting out a dry, bitter laugh. “At least… it wouldn’t have ended this ugly.”
Those fifteen years—no matter what, he’d failed Amelia. He wanted to fix things, but the Amelia who would have given him her whole heart was gone. Now she was all walls, not even a crack left for him to squeeze through.
Cameron couldn’t help but almost laugh at Clive’s miserable, lovesick act.
“Ugly? Clive, come on, drop the act. Don’t pin everything on Kristen. You and your family are the ones who really tore her down.”
Clive’s face darkened. He lunged forward, kicking Cameron straight to the ground.
“I’m only warning you because we’re friends. Kristen never tells the truth—don’t believe a word out of her mouth.”
Right then, Michael showed up, looking for Cameron, and walked into the middle of the chaos. He groaned—leave these two alone for one second and they were at it again.
Mom, Dad, Big Bro, I’m gone! I’m going after my true love! I really love Felix this time, and I’ll chase him to the ends of the earth if I have to. I know he’ll be moved sooner or later. Amelia chased after you shamelessly and still married into our family—why should I be any different? I’m just as good as her. I’ll win Felix over, you’ll see!
Clive crumpled the letter in his fist, breathing hard.
He’d warned Caroline so many times. He thought she’d finally given up on Felix, but now she’d actually run away from home. Unbelievable.
Mrs. Salmeron, her eyes red and puffy, turned her frustration on her husband.
“I told you to let Caroline have a chance! I said you should go talk to the Baker family, ask Mr. Baker about a possible match, or at least arrange for the kids to meet properly! But you wouldn’t even try. You just said it was impossible, told Caroline she was delusional, that she should go look in the mirror…” Her voice cracked. “She’s your daughter! What kind of father are you?”
“Oh, so now it’s my fault?” Klaus shot back, pointing at her. “You’re the one who spoiled her, made her think the world revolves around her! The Baker family? Do you even know who they are? If I went begging, they’d laugh me out of the house—I’d be a joke in this whole town!”
“Back when the Henson patriarch was at his peak, even he had to bow to Mr. Baker! Mr. Baker might be retired now, but the younger Bakers are all impressive. Felix has medals and a bright future—he’s going to outshine them all. And Caroline? Please. Does she really think she’s some kind of fairy princess?”
