Second Floor.
Penny stood quietly in the corner, watching from above as Amelia and Jinx laughed together downstairs. Sunlight danced on Amelia’s hair, making her look like she was glowing. She seemed gentle and beautiful, almost unreal.
“Wow, is that Jinx’s mom? She’s so pretty!” one of the other kids near Penny whispered.
“Hey, is that Timmy with her? Isn’t that Penny’s brother?”
Tina and Sierra, Penny’s best friends, had both met Amelia before. They stared for a moment, then nodded in recognition.
“No, that’s Penny’s nanny!” Tina said, turning to look at Penny. “Penny, your nanny is really pretty in person. You don’t look like her anymore though. Actually, I think she looks a bit like Jinx…”
“Not at all!” Penny snapped. She spun around, cheeks burning, and stomped into the classroom.
Meanwhile, Amelia seemed to sense something. She looked up just in time to catch a glimpse of Penny’s angry back as she disappeared through the classroom door. Amelia paused, noticing that Penny was wearing the dress she’d bought her.
“Mom, let’s go,” Timmy reminded her quietly.
“Alright.” Amelia tore her eyes away and smiled at Jinx. “Bye, Jinx. See you later.”
“Bye, Mrs. Sadinton,” Jinx replied, waving as Amelia led Timmy away. Jinx watched them go with envy in her eyes. It must be so nice, she thought, to have a mom like that.
Shouldering her little backpack, Jinx turned and walked into her own classroom. As soon as she stepped inside, she saw Penny sitting alone at her desk.
Jinx hurried over, her face lighting up. “Penny! I just saw you downstairs and—”
“Go away,” Penny interrupted, her voice loud and sharp. “You smell. Don’t talk to me!”
Jinx froze in place. The other kids glanced over, curious.
Her cheeks turned bright red. She stammered, trying to explain, “I don’t smell... I take a bath every day now…”
As soon as Amelia sat down, a friendly woman next to her leaned over with a big smile.
“You must be Timmy’s mom! I’ve heard so much about you. I’m Shane’s mom!” The woman and her son had the same round, cheerful face.
“Nice to meet you, Shane’s mom,” Amelia replied with a polite smile.
“Timmy told Shane you’re working with the government now. A real medical genius! That’s amazing.”
Amelia was caught off guard. She hadn’t realized Timmy was so proud of her.
“You’re too kind,” she replied modestly.
Shane’s mom waved her hand. “Oh, you’re just being humble! No wonder Timmy’s so handsome and smart—he gets it from you! That Kristen woman came around before, bragging that she was Amelia, but the moment I saw her, I thought, ‘There’s no way she could be the mom of a genius like Timmy!’”
