“So, Ms. Sadinton, who was that message supposed to go to?” The man’s deep, smooth voice slipped right into her ear—low, sexy, and just a little bit dangerous.
Amelia felt her ears heat up.
“I meant to send it to Diana.”
Ryan went quiet for a second, like he was trying to remember who Diana was.
Then it clicked for him. “Diana?”
“Yeah.” Since they were already on the topic, Amelia added, “She actually mentioned wanting to have dinner with us sometime.”
With Timmy sitting in the back seat, Amelia didn’t want to spell things out too clearly.
Ryan picked up on it right away. He chuckled quietly. “So, my future mother-in-law wants to check me out? Got it. I’ll set it up.”
“Don’t scare her, okay? Diana’s been afraid of you since college.”
Ryan sounded amused. “You ever notice that everyone’s a little scared of me? Except you.”
Honestly, she used to be a little scared of him, too…
“Alright, I have to drive now. Make sure you eat something,” Amelia said softly.
“Drive safe,” Ryan replied.
“I will.”
She hung up and, glancing up at the rearview mirror, caught the small smile tugging at her lips.
Lately, she really had been smiling a lot more…
She touched her cheek for a second, then started the car and headed toward the school.
Halfway there, she noticed a black Mercedes behind her, almost like it was following her. Just as she started to get suspicious, the car sped up, passed her, and pulled in front.
The windows were tinted so dark she couldn’t see a thing inside, and the license plate didn’t ring any bells.
She was probably just overthinking it.
Amelia turned her attention back to the road.
“Hey, Timmy,” Jinx greeted him, then looked up at Amelia, her big eyes curving into little crescent moons as she grinned. “Mrs. Sadinton, you look so pretty today! Like a fairy!”
“Thank you, sweetheart. You look beautiful too,” Amelia said, smiling warmly.
She really was happy for Jinx. Felix was taking great care of her now. The girl’s cheeks, once so thin, had started to fill out. She seemed brighter, more lively than ever.
Today, Jinx wore a gorgeous princess dress, with an adorable hair clip.
Felix really was raising her like a little princess.
“Jinx, I need to take Timmy to his classroom first, but I’ll come see you right after, okay?”
“Really?” Jinx’s whole face lit up with excitement, but then she quickly turned serious and mature. “Mrs. Sadinton, you can just stay with Penny. I’m already happy just seeing you here.”
Jinx’s past had made her so much more considerate—and careful—than most kids her age.
Suddenly, Amelia understood why, even when things were really dangerous, Felix had called to ask her to spend time with Jinx.
Amelia knelt down and gently straightened the collar on Jinx’s dress. “Penny has her dad and plenty of people with her,” she said softly. “She doesn’t need me right now. Besides, Mrs. Sadinton promised someone she’d spend special time with you today.”
